The General Maintenance person III leads custodial services and miscellaneous general support to staff, public visitors and tenant organizations. Provides material transportation and/or other general support activities as directed. Responds to facility emergencies and provides minor repairs as necessary to prevent damage or ongoing loss until response by appropriate staff. May provide support to general maintenance tasks as assigned.
Essential Functions:
- Leads the general maintenance/custodial team including scheduling, training, monitoring work for quality and recommending candidates for hire.
- Responsible for custodial services to buildings, offices and dormitory facilities as necessary to maintain them in a clean and orderly condition. Custodial services will include but not be limited to:
- Dusting; refuse/trash removal; sweeping; carpet vacuuming or shampooing; floor scrubbing, mopping and waxing; cleaning windows, walls and partitions; cleaning restrooms.
- Performs general maintenance/crafts duties as required for emergency response to facility infrastructure, buildings, equipment and Telescope domes (at observatories) to prevent damage. Requires minor proficiency in general crafts areas as may be appropriate for shutdown of equipment or protection of facility items.
- Provides material transportation services as directed.
- May utilize manlift for elevated work.
- May utilize forklift for material handling.
- General knowledge and ability to use tools, materials and methods for emergency response and custodial duties.
- May provide support or perform other general/basic maintenance activities or support as assigned.
- May be required to maintain records related to specific activities and prepare reports as requested.
- Responsible for knowing and using safe operating methods and practices, including Safety Data Sheets applicable to the position, as well as general safety issues. Also, responsible for reporting unsafe conditions and/or procedures.
- Works under the direction and supervision of the assigned Lead, Supervisor or Manager.
- If assigned, serves as Member of Site Specific Emergency Response Team. Will assist in drills and emergency response efforts as assigned.
- All AURA employees are responsible for the proper management and control of all AURA property within their work area, whether assigned to them or someone else. This responsibility includes reporting any known missing, stolen, or non-working property in their work area to their supervisor or the AURA Property Officer
- Responsible for ensuring compliance with government award terms and conditions assigned to this position or subordinates of this position.

Requirements
- Normally, graduation from High School or vocational school, or equivalent.
- Six years’ experience in general building maintenance and custodial needs.
- General knowledge of methods and techniques for building maintenance and janitorial services.
- General knowledge and ability to use tools, materials and methods for emergency response and custodial duties.
- Minor proficiency in general crafts areas as may be appropriate for shutdown of equipment or protection of facility items.
- Able to operate manlift and material transportation equipment and obtain necessary certifications.
- Ability to follow verbal or written directions.
- Basic reading, writing and speaking skills to prepare documents and records.
- Intermediate computer skills as may be needed to correspond and/or communicate information.
- Ability to cooperate with others as part of a team and work independently.
- General aptitude for safety practices and other various associated safety issues.
- A valid driver’s or CDL license as may be required.

- sufficient spoken aural capacity to hear and understand instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid
- ability to impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately
- If based at Kitt Peak: Able to climb stairs and work at 6,800 feet altitude and may be required to extend worktime and/or stay overnight at Kitt Peak based on emergency operational and/or safety needs.
Salary Range:
$19.90/hr - $22.45/hr. The final salary will depend on skills, qualifications and experience.
