GENERAL JOB FUNCTION:
The Junior Varsity Golf Coach, under the direction of the Head Varsity Golf Coach and in partnership with the Athletic Department, will support the growth and development of the Montague Golf program by fostering a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented environment. This role emphasizes character development, fundamental skill-building, and strategic understanding to prepare student-athletes for success and potential advancement to the varsity level. The JV Golf Coach will promote self-discipline, confidence, and a strong work ethic while upholding the values of leadership, sportsmanship, and academic and athletic integrity expected of representatives of Montague Area Public Schools.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred
- Previous experience coaching or playing golf, preferably at high school or collegiate level
- Strong understanding of golf fundamentals, rules, and techniques
- Knowledge of youth development, injury prevention, and confidence-building strategies
- Familiarity with golf etiquette, course management, and scoring apps
- Ability to lead and positively motivate young student-athletes
- Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
- CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain
- Must pay for and pass a background check and meet all school district coaching requirements prior to beginning work
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
PRESEASON
- Collaborate with Head Varsity Golf Coach to provide a list of anticipated participants and ensure that all paper work regarding eligibility, roster, physicals, and signed athletic codes are turned into the Athletic Director prior to deadline
- Responsible for arrangements and preparation of equipment, uniforms, and practice facilities
- Arrange transportation needs with Athletic Director for all meets
- Discuss with the Athletic Director the JV golf meet schedule and any special requirements for the determined schedule
IN-SEASON
- Plan, organize, and lead practice sessions that teach fundamental golf skills, including swing mechanics, putting, chipping, rules, and course etiquette
- Promote the development of sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and respect among all players
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, matches, and team travel to ensure safety and proper conduct
- Collaborate with the Head Varsity Coach to maintain alignment in program philosophy, instruction, and standards
- Assist with team selection, player evaluations, and placements
- Communicate clearly with student-athletes, parents, and staff about schedules, expectations, and team updates
- Manage and maintain golf equipment, uniforms, and related resources
- Enforce all school district, league policies, and all M.H.S.A.A. regulations including eligibility and conduct standards
- Serve as a role model for student-athletes in leadership, behavior, and attitude
- Ensure any athlete who is injured and requires a doctor or physical assistance care must have a release prior to participating in any practice or meet. This includes working closely with the athletic trainer who has the authority to hold any athlete from practice or competition
- Support the academic goals of student-athletes by encouraging strong study habits and school engagement
- Check academic progress of players weekly, and establish a good working relationship with teaching staff to communicate the needs of students experiencing academic difficulties
- Be regular in attendance and punctual in reporting to assignment
- Other duties as assigned
