Overview:


We are searching for a part-time Executive Speech Writer/Editor to join our team. This is a remote job opportunity that requires being a US Citizen and ability to pass a clearance check.


Serving as an executive speech writer/editor on a cross-functional team of professionals, you will support Military Community and Family Policy and other Department of Defense leadership as they promote quality of life programs for service members and their families. Types of remarks include talking points, video scripts, opening/closing/keynote addresses, and executive summaries.

Responsibilities/Skills:

  • Write compelling, persuasive and audience-tailored speeches for executives to present to members of the military and their families.
  • Adapt tone and language to reflect the speaker's voice and the occasion.
  • Align speech content with organizational goals, brand identity and messaging strategy.
  • Conduct in-depth research on topics, audiences and current events to inform speech content.
  • Gather anecdotes, data and quotes to enrich storytelling and credibility.
  • Collaborate closely with executives, communications team and subject matter experts to understand key messages and ensure consistency across different projects.
  • Incorporate feedback and revise drafts to meet expectations and deadlines.
  • Draft rapid-response statements or speeches during high-stakes moments like crises or major announcements.
  • Follow specific style guides and communication plans while writing and editing content.
  • Perform other duties as requested.


Responsibilities/Abilities:

  • Research information in support of content development requirements and apply knowledge gained when writing.
  • Translate complex policies and ideas into engaging messages that connect with the intended audience.
  • Apply the guidance from the provided Military Community and Family Policy Style Guide and the Associated Press Stylebook to any content creation or editing of content.
  • Adapt quickly to changing requests, language preferences, policies and political landscape.
  • Work cooperatively with coworkers and other functional team members such as graphic designers, editors, strategists and other key staff on products and services, as needed.
  • Incorporate feedback and apply it consistently across projects.
  • Read and understand information and ideas presented in writing. Write clearly and effectively for the defined target audience.
  • Develop written materials on short deadlines with minimal guidance or information.
  • Provide thoughtful edits to improve the speech content on both macro and micro levels.
  • Perform other duties as requested.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least five (5) years of speech writing experience.
  • Industry knowledge of Military quality of life programs.
  • Structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
  • Applicable style guides knowledge, such as the Associated Press Stylebook.
  • Methods of tracking and maintaining version control.
  • Administrative and clerical procedures in accordance with the company's best practices.
  • Terms and concepts commonly expressed in the armed services and federal government.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • The ability to assist coworkers in more senior positions and/or perform functional duties under the oversight of more senior positions.

  • Collaborate with the team to find solutions and innovative ideas for improved processes, techniques, and ways to add value to work.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to attain a secret clearance, or already have one.
