Supplemental Information
The HESJ Public Health Intern will support various initiatives within the organization's public health programs. This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public health research, program development, implementation, and evaluation.
Responsibilities:
- Research: Conduct literature reviews, gather data, and analyze information related to public health issues, interventions, and policies.
- Program Development: Assist in the development or enhancement of programs with the HESJ Division (HESJ, HIV/STI, MomsFirst, Office Mental Health, and Addiction Recovery, and the Office of Minority Health), including designing strategies, creating materials, and implementing interventions.
- Data Collection and Analysis: Collect, organize, and analyze health data disaggregated by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other demographic factors to identify disparities and inform targeted interventions and policy recommendations
- Community Engagement: Participate in community outreach activities focused on promoting health equity and social justice, addressing disparities in access to healthcare, and advocating for marginalized populations, including minority communities.
- Documentation: Prepare reports, presentations, and other documents to communicate findings, progress, and outcomes to stakeholders.
- Collaboration and Partnerships: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including public health professionals, researchers, community partners, government agencies, community-based organizations, advocacy groups, and healthcare providers to promote health equity, improve access to care, and enhance services for vulnerable populations.
- Health Education: Assist in developing and delivering health education programs that address the unique needs of diverse communities, including resources for mental health and substance abuse prevention, maternal and child health services, and HIV/STI awareness.
- Administrative Support: Provide administrative support as needed, such as scheduling meetings, managing databases, and maintaining project files.
- Cultural Competence: Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity in all interactions and activities, recognizing the impact of social determinants of health, on health outcomes.
- Health Disparities: Contribute to initiatives aimed at reducing health disparities among underserved populations, particularly in areas such as minority health, mental health, substance abuse prevention, maternal and child health, and HIV/STI prevention.
- Currently enrolled in a degree program in public health, epidemiology, health sciences, or a related field.
- Strong research skills with experience in completing literature reviews, data collection, and analysis.
- Knowledge of public health principles, theories, and best practices or theories and best practices as they relate to programs within the HESJ Division.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Some basic knowledge of statistical analysis software (e.g., Excel, SPSS, SAS, R).
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Commitment to public health advocacy, equity, and social justice.
- Familiarity with health equity principles, social determinants of health, and strategies for addressing health disparities.
- Understanding minority health issues, including cultural considerations, barriers to care, and community engagement approaches.
- Knowledge of evidence-based practices for mental health promotion, substance abuse prevention, maternal and child health services, and HIV/STI prevention and treatment.
- Commitment to advancing health equity, promoting social justice, and advocating for equitable healthcare policies and programs.
This internship is part-time for three months to one year depending on the requirements of the academic program. For a typical academic year, the internship begins In August and ends in May. For summer internships, the internship begins in May and ends in July. The typical schedule is 15-20 hours per week, with flexibility based on academic requirements These hours include the need for evening and weekend support dependent upon the program and project.
