Overview and Responsibilities:
The Machine Tool Technician is responsible for the ordering, inventory, and distribution of parts and supplies for the Machine Tool programs and for maintaining related records.

Responsibilities:
  • Research, set up, organize, and manage all shop tooling, cutting tools, and instructional supplies.
  • Work with vendors on acquiring new items on the market and product line changes.
  • Maintain parts catalog file.
  • Conduct annual physical inventory and/or perpetual inventory.
  • Maintain computer listings of tooling and supplies.
  • Maintain maintenance records for all equipment in the Machine Tool programs.
  • Distribute tooling, cutters, and supplies to students, faculty, and tenant users.
  • Assist students and tenants with the ordering of proper tooling and tools as necessary.
  • Maintain student tool lists; prepare and distribute toolboxes and shop coats to new students.
  • Assist students with media review.
  • Assist with departmental budgeting.
  • Provide purchasing support for the Machine Tool Program and support to faculty making program purchases.
  • Process procurement card (p-card) statements at the end of each month.
  • Process requisitions and receive and inventory supplies; recommend vendors.
  • Verify price and availability of items to be ordered.
  • Research newest cutting tool information through the use of internet and other sources.
  • Conduct machine troubleshooting, including electrical.
  • Repair machines and fabricate machined parts.
  • Perform welding fabrication when required.
  • Perform spray painting of department machines.
  • Fabricate consumable items for the program.
  • May direct activities of work study students.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of merchandising methods and procedures used in receipt, storage, and issuance of a variety of goods.
  • Knowledge of inventory control systems and procedures and bookkeeping procedures and methods.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver 40 pounds.
  • Ability to drive a forklift.
  • Ability to model integrity through self-awareness, personal accountability, ethical behavior, quality standards, and sustainable practices.
  • Ability to think critically by applying problem solving practices, acquiring relevant information, using technology and other resources appropriately, and evaluating alternatives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively by speaking and writing clearly, concisely, and professionally; practicing active listening; reading critically and adapting communication for audience.
  • Ability to value diversity by recognizing personal biases, adapting to culturally diverse situations, and demonstrating a commitment to equity, inclusion, and respectful interactions with persons of diverse ethnic, cultural, social-economic, or educational backgrounds.
  • Intermediate knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Qualifications:
  • Two-year technical diploma in Machine Tooling or maintenance related field.
  • Minimum of two years of occupational experience in a manufacturing environment; four years of experience with machining processes (e.g., drilling, milling turning, and grinding) preferred.
  • Experience in equipment repair; experience requiring general knowledge of all areas of repair such as electrical troubleshooting, pneumatics, hydraulics, machine tool, welding, and carpentry.
