Summary

A Materials Handler, colloquially “Water Spider”, is responsible for keeping workstations fully stocked with materials. This is to control the continuous flow of productivity, assuring that the daily production and on-time delivery schedules are met. This is done in a fast-paced environment requiring excellent communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to organize and prioritize. The primary function will be the coordination and delivery of component parts necessary to sustain manufacturing operations while performing material handling duties.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Becomes knowledgeable in B-W products, features, and functionality and the work cells in the plant that produce them.

2. Ensures that just-in-time (JIT) practices are applied to ensure the right number of materials and supplies at the right time in the right place in the facility.

3. Responsible for the movement of raw materials into the production areas to be staged into the work cells and within the factory.

4. Issues and/or distributes materials, products, parts, and supplies to appropriate departments or individuals, based on information from incoming requisitions.

5. Enter data into the enterprise resource planning (ERP) for quantities of parts issued and transferred between locations, inventory, and cycle count adjustments.

6. Verifies ERP item quantities by comparing them to physical counts of stock and investigates discrepancies to ensure accurate inventory quantities.

7. Determines proper storage methods, identification, and stock locations based on turnover, environmental factors, and physical capabilities of facilities.

8. Stores items in an orderly and easily accessible manner in stockrooms, supply rooms, or other areas.

9. Maintain proper inventory levels of materials in Control and at work-cells to help ensure inventory turns meet company metrics.

10. Identifies stock items using identification tags, stamps, electric marking tools, or other labeling equipment. Retrieve and organize totes, pallets, carts, etc. as required.

11. Examines and inspect stock items for wear, defects or expired stock and report this to supervisors. Moreover, it keeps records on the use and/or damage of stock or stock handling equipment.

12. Work closely with other functions to support implementing opportunities for continuous improvements.

13. Support 5S (Sort (Seiri), Set in Order (Seiton), Shine (Seiso), Standardize (Seiketsu), and Sustain (Shitsuke)) activities within the facility supporting methodology for organizing, cleaning, developing, and sustaining a productive work environment.

14. Active attendance and consistently punctual at work and meetings. Arriving at meetings prepared. Ensure work responsibilities are covered when absent.

15. Observes ALL safety and security procedures, reports potentially unsafe conditions. Uses equipment and materials properly as per Occupational Health and Safet Administration (OSHSA) Division of Occupational Safety and Health (colloquially Cal/OSHA), any manufacturer’s instructions; while maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient work area.

Education & Experience

A high school diploma (or equivalent) is preferred, or at minimum, two years of experience for an original equipment manufacturing (OEM) environment.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

1. Understand basic manufacturing processes and how Inventory Control interacts with upstream and downstream functions.

2. Familiarity with the use of industry standard purchase order software platforms, e.g., Material Resources Planning (MRP) or Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). Preferred are abilities to query, monitor and input ERP system data.

3. Preferred, are good computer skills and familiar with Microsoft®[1] Outlook®, Teams, and Excel®. Experience with basic formulas and calculations in a spreadsheet is preferred.

4. Understanding of inventory management and methodologies (e.g., ABC inventory management).

5. Have a good ability to communicate effectively and work with staff, management, contractors, suppliers, and other representatives, either orally or in writing.

6. In a dynamic manufacturing environment, being able to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and achieve set targets is critical.

7. This role requires impeccable attention to detail in review of purchase orders, system reports, and supplier contracts.

8. Preferred is production and processing knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods while maintaining company margins.

9. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is desired.

Travel

Infrequent local trips to pick up or deliver parts and/or equipment.

Physical Demands

This is largely an active role (i.e., long periods of standing & walking). Daily, the role will require walking to work cells, offices, and other departments. The offices are on two floors, so occasional stair climbing might be needed (an elevator is available). This is considered a heavy work position where the employee will exert fifty (50) to one hundred (100) pounds of force occasionally, and/or twenty-five (25) to fifty (50) pounds of force frequently, and/or ten (10) to twenty (20) pounds of force constantly to move objects. The role also requires the ability to reach, which is defined as when a person bends the elbows, and the angle at the shoulders is about ninety degrees (90°) or more, or (2) A person keeps the elbow extended, and the angle at the shoulder is about One-hundred twenty-five degrees (125°) or more.

Work Environment

This job operates in a manufacturing environment, that, at a minimum, will require safety glasses and, in some instances, hearing protection. Please note that the facility contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
