General Overview:
Behavioral Health Therapists are licensed professionals trained to support individuals experiencing emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. They may collaborate with psychologists, psychiatrists, and other specialists, making referrals as appropriate. Therapy may be delivered in individual sessions, group settings, or include family members. As part of their role, therapists conduct interviews, assessments, and evaluations to understand a client's mental health status and create personalized treatment plans. They are responsible for maintaining thorough documentation and monitoring client progress over time.
Behavioral Health Therapist
Position Characteristics:
Under supervision, a provisionally licensed Behavioral Health Therapist gathers and records client information from various sources, including community partners. They conduct interviews, observations, and assessments to determine the client’s physical and mental well-being.
Preferred Education and Experience for Full Role Functionality:
Active licensure in New Mexico as an LMSW, LISW, LMHC, LMFT, LPCC, LCSW, or LPAT, along with one (1) year of relevant experience related to the key responsibilities of this role.
Minimum Requirements:
Current licensure in New Mexico as an LMSW, LISW, LCSW, LPCC, LMHC, LMFT, or LPAT.
Key Responsibilities:
- Document counseling sessions, evaluations, interventions, and treatment recommendations in accordance with clinical and medical record standards.
- Assess or coordinate risk evaluations related to suicide for patients or through community partners.
- Provide counseling services to individuals, families, groups, or communities facing mental health issues, economic hardship, substance abuse, physical abuse, or adjustment challenges.
- Gather and record information about clients by consulting with community providers, probation/parole officers, and through direct observation and assessment.
- Work in collaboration with other healthcare providers, law enforcement, families, and treatment teams to develop and manage care plans.
- Recognize and respond to critical mental health situations (e.g., suicidal ideation, psychosis, threats of violence) by referring to appropriate emergency or psychiatric resources.
- Develop, execute, and document follow-up or aftercare strategies for clients exiting treatment, in partnership with community providers.
- Ensure clients are referred—or oversee that referrals are made—to supportive services such as employment assistance, legal support, housing, healthcare, and financial aid. Provide practical guidance on accessing these resources.
- Stay current with best practices and maintain licensure through ongoing education, participation in staff meetings, supervision, and evaluations.
- Provide crisis response when needed and collaborate with facility-based treatment providers as part of care coordination.
