Job description

About Lightsource bp

Lightsource bp is a global leader in the development and management of utility-scale solar and energy storage projects. As demand for solar energy continues to grow, we are well positioned to help deliver a more sustainable energy future.

Our entrepreneurial and collaborative culture empowers people to challenge convention, develop innovative solutions, and make a meaningful impact. By joining Lightsource bp, you will work alongside colleagues who are passionate about renewable energy, technology, and responsible project delivery.

About the role

Lightsource bp is seeking an experienced Operations Engineer to optimize the technical and commercial performance of our operating solar and Battery Energy Storage System, BESS, assets across the United States.

Working within the Operations and Asset Management team, you will partner closely with Operations Managers, Asset Managers, O&M providers, and global technical teams. You will use SCADA and asset-level data to identify underperformance, quantify energy and financial impacts, prioritize improvements, and help ensure that expected value is recovered.

You will also collaborate with our Construction, Interconnection, and Operational Readiness teams to support commissioning and seamless project handovers. Your insights will help strengthen the design, execution, and operation of current and future projects.

This is an opportunity for an analytical and commercially minded engineer to influence portfolio performance and drive measurable operational improvements.

What you’ll do

  • Establish a data-driven view of asset performance and energy losses using Lightsource bp’s SCADA and asset-level data.
  • Identify recurring failures, performance issues, and common underperformance trends across the portfolio.
  • Develop automated reporting that highlights underperformance and potentially recoverable losses.
  • Compare SCADA-derived findings with O&M partner reporting, investigate material differences, and strengthen evidence-based partner management.
  • Quantify technical issues in terms of energy and financial impact, creating a value-ranked portfolio of potential interventions.
  • Develop remediation plans in partnership with Asset Managers, including business cases and implementation plans.
  • Translate technical analysis into clear operational actions, then track whether the expected value is recovered.
  • Support commissioning, operational readiness, and project handover to the Operations and Asset Management team.
  • Scope, review, and accept technical deliverables from external partners.
  • Validate project and performance metrics while supporting the remediation of identified issues.
  • Incorporate operational lessons learned into project designs, technical specifications, and execution-stage activities.
  • Partner with the Global Performance and Monitoring team and recommend improvements to performance reporting.
  • Document and streamline processes and workflows to improve operational efficiency.
  • Serve as a technical lead when engaging with regional and global internal stakeholders.

What you’ll bring

Qualifications and knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree, ideally in Electrical Engineering. Other relevant qualifications supported by appropriate experience will also be considered.
  • At least five years of experience in a similar role supporting utility-scale renewable energy projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of current NEC, UL, and NFPA codes.
  • Experience with SQL, Python, Snowflake, and Power BI is preferred.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% to project sites and other key meetings.

Relevant experience

  • Experience with utility-scale renewable energy project design, technical document review, and project management support.
  • Knowledge of high-voltage substations and energy storage systems.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, project closeout, operational readiness, and handover activities.
  • Experience analyzing renewable energy project performance and losses using SCADA and time-series operational data.
  • Demonstrated ability to use analytics to identify, evaluate, and troubleshoot technical issues affecting operating assets.
  • Experience assessing contractual performance and incorporating identified gaps into contract revisions.
  • Strong attention to detail in environments where technical accuracy is critical.
  • A practical understanding of how utility-scale solar and BESS projects are constructed and operated.

What will help you succeed

You are a curious and pragmatic problem solver who can move from identifying an issue to influencing action and measuring the outcome. You combine strong technical judgment with the ability to communicate clearly and build credibility with engineers, Asset Managers, O&M partners, and non-technical stakeholders.

You will also bring:

  • Strong analytical judgment and commercial awareness.
  • The ability to develop and implement technically driven operational improvements.
  • The initiative to work independently, organize competing priorities, and engage additional resources when needed.
  • The ability to communicate complex technical issues clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • A flexible and composed approach in a fast-moving, evolving business.
  • The ability to learn new systems and processes quickly.

What we offer

  • Annual base salary of $135,000 to $155,000
  • 20% annual bonus opportunity
  • Medical, dental, prescription, and vision coverage beginning on your first day
  • Retention bonus program
  • Four weeks of vacation, three weeks of sick leave, and 11 paid holidays annually
  • 401(k) plan with a 3% nonelective employer contribution
  • Monthly personal phone reimbursement of up to $100
  • Lifestyle Savings Account and additional benefits
  • Opportunities to participate in charitable causes, sustainability initiatives, and programs such as our solar honey project
