University Housing provides an essential element of the Illinois experience, with hundreds of employees across seven units working together to build and maintain safe, healthy and welcoming homes for our residents. With 26 residence halls, three apartment complexes, nine dining locations, multiple storage facilities, miles of sidewalk, a quad and so much more to care for - our Facilities team has its hands full. University Housing Facilities include maintenance, facility planning, engineering, interior design and building service.


Job Summary

Perform skilled work in the painting trade, ensuring high-quality finishes for both interior and exterior surfaces, while maintaining safety standards. All University Housing staff will engage and contribute to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within University Housing.

Duties & Responsibilities

Painting Tasks

  • Prepares areas to be painted and paints surfaces for preparatory and final coat by brushing, rolling and/or spraying.
  • On building interiors, a painter is responsible for:
    • Removing furniture and wall hangings; covering floors, placing protective covers on permanent fixtures, washes vent covers, grids, ceilings, washes woodwork and walls, patches plaster and spackles as needed.
    • A painter will remove all paint specks from floors and adjacent areas, restoring original furnishings to the area, and sweeps debris as needed.
  • On building exteriors, a painter is responsible for:
  • Erecting and using scaffolding, utilizing ladders and lifts to perform elevated painting tasks.
    • Removes objects such as vines and nests, scrapes flaking paint, sands, spot primes, etc.
    • Marks and paints floor, tapes and finishes drywall and plaster.
    • Cuts and installs window glass.
    • Installs wall coverings or vinyl.
    • Installs lettering and performs sign work as necessary.

Organization and Safety

  • Responsible for light housekeeping duties and fire protection maintenance in mechanical equipment rooms or shop areas where painting tools and equipment are stored.
  • Responsible for proper care and security of all painting equipment such as brushes, rollers, sprayers, ladders, etc.
  • Complies with all safe working procedures.

Additional Physical Demands

This position may involve relocating or transporting as well as considerable use of one’s arms and legs and moving one’s whole body, such as: climbing, balancing, walking, squatting, grabbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, remaining stationary for an extended period of time, and reaching and handling of materials in the course of completing work assignments.

Position may also involve looking at objects at close range or at a distance; as well as matching or detecting differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.


Minimum Qualifications

Per SUCSS class spec. Possession of a valid State of Illinois Class "D" Driver’s License.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, regulations and strategies to promote health and safety practices for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology.
  • Skill in time and resource management.
  • Skill in personnel resources management through motivating, developing, and directing subordinates as they work, identifying the best skill sets for completion of the job.
  • Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Skill in determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide quickly and correctly.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer with a general understanding of application software, and an understanding of the Internet.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas verbally and in writing.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3027 - Painter position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. This is a bargained position and as such, the salary is driven by the collective bargaining agreement. The wage for this position is $39.54 per hour.
