As our Drop In Center Peer Support Specialist, you will provide a welcoming, recovery-focused environment to participants utilizing the Drop In Center at SouthLight’s Raleigh Hub. This position is responsible for facilitating daily check-in procedures and overseeing the smooth functioning of activities while promoting and upholding a safe, inclusive and structured environment. The Drop In Center Peer Support Specialist also provides trauma-informed and individualized, strengths-based support to participants while leveraging their own lived experience and training.

Schedule
Full-time, Monday - Friday, 12pm - 8pm
Pay
Starting pay is $18.00 per hour.

- You will be eligible for medical benefits the first of the month following your first 30 days.

Responsibilities of a Drop In Center Peer Support Specialist
- Ensure participant sign-in procedures are followed and track all required data in electronic health record system
- Establish supportive relationships with participants grounded in empathy, mutual respect, and recovery principles
- Assist individuals in developing coping strategies, self-advocacy skills, and wellness planning
- In collaboration with SouthLight’s Social Determinants of Health Program, offer guidance on navigating treatment services, housing resources, employment supports, and community programs
- Assist in the development and facilitation of peer-led support groups including, but not limited to SMART recovery and WRAP development groups, women’s and Veteran’s support groups, life skills groups and healthy coping skills groups
- Apply crisis de-escalation techniques when necessary, while utilizing preventative strategies to reduce the likelihood of escalation and ensure participant and staff safety
- Share appropriate aspects of lived experience(s) in mental health and substance use to inspire hope, resiliency and recovery
- Engage in community outreach activities when appropriate to promote program awareness, build relationships, and connect individuals to available services
Qualifications of a Drop In Center Peer Support Specialist
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent and be at least 18 years old.
- Minimum 1 year experience working with the mental health/substance use adult population in a community setting. Behavioral health experience a plus.
Licensure/Certifications
- Active Certification in NC as Peer Support Specialist
- Certification in CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens training and CPI
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Professional interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team model that evolves and adapts based on program needs
- Highly organized and detail-oriented
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn with strong attention to detail
- Positive attitude and ability to be flexible and embrace change in a fast-paced environment
- Commitment to strong customer service focus rooted in empathy
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills
- Organizational skills to prioritize workload and meet deadlines, develop and carry-out project assignments in an efficient and timely manner and to provide accurate and succinct documentation of activities
- Ability to use an electronic medical record system
- Comfortable with MS Office Suite and windows-based applications
