In the state of California, the salary range is $97,100 - $148,200.
Role Summary:
The Powertrain Systems Engineer Sr reports directly to Mgr System Analysis and is directly responsible for all quality and engineering aspects of the entire xEV powertrain system including battery charging. Focus is on MEB and other future xEV powertrains.
The Powertrain Systems Engineer Sr has the following key areas of responsibility pertaining to the powertrain system: System analysis for customer complaints and charging issues; organization of interoperability tests and the support of engineering department and project launches.
Furthermore, the Powertrain Systems Engineer Sr must have and maintains a long-term, collaborative working relationship with: Dealerships, Quality Technician Managers (QTM), Product Support, all NAR QA-Teams as well as German and Mexican powertrain engineers. This is a “hands on” engineering role.
Role Responsibilities:
System-Analysis (on car) – (30%)
· The Powertrain System Engineer Sr. in the System Analysis Team performs system analysis relevant to customer complaints and other technical issues in the high voltage powertrain and charging system
· Using software tools for understanding the function of powertrain system for problem solving (INCA, CANape, ODIS, Diagra, etc.)
· Supports other departments with system analysis for powertrain systems and software updates
· Preparing data loggers for on car analysis (set up, triggering during measurement)
· Evaluates data logged in cars and transfer the results into FAP process or to other involved teams
· Prepares analysis results in presentations and participates in management meetings
Test drives and interoperability testing– (30%)
· Attends and supports VW AG test drives to deepen knowledge of current/future products for the region
· Drivability evaluation of VW powertrains and competitor cars
· Performs remote testing for German powertrain engineering departments
· Organizes and performs interoperability tests of new software or hardware on charging infrastructure of different vendors in California
· Evaluates logged test data and transfers the results to customers or other involved teams
· Prepares test results in presentations and participates in management meetings
Product Launches and Engineering Support – (30%)
· Supports launches in the US and Canada with system analysis on powertrain systems and charging system (currently MEB)
· Provides analysis results to Engineering, QA, and Product Support
· Develops, tests, and monitors success of technical field fixes, software updates, technical bulletins, and other technical actions.
· Implements measurement and test equipment for OEC including personal protection equipment
· Evaluates diagnostic systems, repair procedures, and proposes necessary improvements
Project Management – (10%)
· Organizes, moderates and documents meetings with relevant stakeholders
· Prepares presentations and participates in VWoA-QA handover meetings (e.g. parts analysis team)
· Supervises as vEFK the other team members while performing work on high voltage systems
· Participates in workshops to plan future activities
· Evaluates powertrain related J.D.Power report data and coordinates in depth analysis
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Years of Relevant Experience:
- Min 7 years of experience in Automotive Engineering (Including 2+ years in high voltage systems)
Education - Required:
· Bachelor’s Degree Automotive, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Education - Desired:
- Master’s Degree in Automotive Engineering or related field

· Expert knowledge of Volkswagen/Audi xEV powertrain systems and software
· Expert knowledge of xEV charging system and interaction with charging infrastructure
· EFK and AuS (High voltage training and working under voltage)
· Proven work experience on live automotive high voltage systems
· Work experience and network within VW/Audi powertrain engineering department in Germany
· Fluency in written and spoken German & English
· Knowledge of CAN and PLC communication and the corresponding standards/regulations
· Expert level in using automotive tracing and data logging tools (INCA, Diagra, CANoe, CANalyzer, CANape, etc.)
· Ability to analyze data and perform root cause analyses
Specialized Skills - Desired:
· Automotive industry experience preferably with emphasis on xEV powertrains
· Expert knowledge of analysis equipment (Oscilloscope, VW diagnostic tools)
· Knowledge of VW internal IT systems
· Knowledge of Volkswagen Service and Quality structure
· International working experience and understanding of cultural differences
· Coding skills in Matlab, Python or C++
· Passion for cars and powertrains
Work Flexibility:
· Work schedule based on business requirements (min. 40 hours / week) including early morning meetings with 9 hour time difference to Germany, occasional Saturday, and occasional overtime.
· Core work hours 7AM – 4 PM
· Travel to suppliers and different charging sites in California to perform interoperability tests
· Travel to R&D and quality assurance to interface with engineers, technicians, and local personnel
