Summary:
The Recreation Center Custodial Lead position is an essential part of the Town of 'Berthoud's Recreation Center in keeping the facility clean and safe. This position is responsible for performing various skills that are associated with the routine maintenance of the facility and equipment, including mechanical preventative maintenance and custodial care of the building. The Custodial Lead also completes event setups/breakdowns, organizes deep cleaning throughout the year and plays a key part during the annual closure. This position directly reports to the Operations Manager to the Rec Center. The schedule of this position is full time and works four, ten hour days in the work week (M-Th or Tu-Fri).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Performing various skills associated with routine maintenance of the facility and equipment, including mechanical preventative maintenance and custodial care of the building
- Assists with hiring, training, directing, and inspecting work performed by part time staff; assist in providing or coordinating saff training; and assist employees to correct deficiencies
- Cleaning and disinfecting fixtures, floors, mirrors, windows, doors, and walls including those in the kitchen, bathrooms, utility rooms, locker rooms, weight rooms, and other work areas as needed
- Maintains cleanliness/disinfecting of facility center floors, walls, bathrooms, locker rooms, games, etc
- Review weekly event schedules and ensure setups and breakdowns are communicated and executed in a timely manner.
- Attend and take part in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
- Maintain fitness equipment by cleaning, lubing cables and communicating additional work that needs to be done by a professional.
- Complete minor maintenance repairs including hanging pictures, replacing lightbulbs, tighting screws in lockers, etc.
- Purchase supplies and equipment, file work orders and maintain written or electronic copies of project records utilizing Connect2Concepts software.
- Assist in small projects by working with contractors on remodels/upgrades including carpet installs, various tile/concrete/epoxy flooring, electrical and lighting, door/hardware, and plumbing repairs.
- Maintains outside entranceways into and around the building to ensure a safe and clean environment, including snow removal during winter months.
- Maintains accurate records of custodial and maintenance supplies received and used, and notifies Supervisor of deficiencies in supplies and submits monthly orders to Supervisor.
- This position works with cleaning chemicals and other cleaning materials, must be able to read directions and chemical labels.
- Assit in the supervision of part-time custodial employees in the recreation department. Responsibilities may include some interviewing, training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience may be considered for the position. A typical way to demonstrate the education and experience necessary for the position is:
- 1-3 years of hands on experience with building maintenance and general maintenance practice;
- Knowledge of maintenance and minor repair as it relates to public buildings;
- Current certification in Community CPR, First Aid and AED or within 3 months of hire.
- Spanish/English bilingual skills preferred;
- General computer skills, excellent customer service skills, basic budget writing knowledge and mathematic skills are preferred.
- Ability to work through frequent interruptions and heavy internal contact;
- Ability to work weekdays and some nights, weekends, evenings and holidays;
- Work is performed in an office and outside environment;
- Knowledge of how to properly manage exposure to chemicals, electrical and plumbing materials and the use of SDS sheets.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of general office software including word processing and spreadsheets as well as experience with specialized recreational management software or other fitness related platforms.
Certificates and Licenses:
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License.
- Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification or acquire after 3 months of hire
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises part-time custodial employees in the Recreation department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include all or some interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Work is generally performed in an office environment but while performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions during program oversight and evaluation. The employee may regularly travel to and from buildings to complete job responsibilities and tasks assigned.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but may be loud at times with frequent interruptions and frequent contact with members of the public.
