Job description

What you will do:

As the Simulation Test Manager, you will lead a team of simulation test engineers responsible for the virtual verification and validation (V&V) of Torc’s autonomous truck. You will set the strategic and technical direction for the team, ensuring that simulation-based evidence for both perception and autonomous behavior supports Torc’s safety case and aligns with industry standards including ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO 8800, and ISO 26262. You will also partner with development, integration, and safety teams and be instrumental in growing the robustness and safety of our self-driving technology.

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of simulation test engineers, setting clear goals, priorities, and development plans.
  • Define and own the scaled simulation V&V strategy, roadmap, and technical direction for the team in support of Torc’s autonomous truck safety case.
  • Ensure simulation test methods, processes, and evidence align with ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO 8800, and ISO 26262.
  • Partner with Product, Systems, and Safety teams to translate requirements, hazardous, and ODD definitions into simulation V&V strategies and release-readiness criteria.
  • Plan and oversee simulation test campaigns, including resourcing, scheduling, and delivery against program milestones.
  • Guide the evolution of Torc’s Scenario Library, containing Abstract, Logical, and Concrete scenarios, to ensure robust ODD coverage and traceability to requirements.
  • Identify testing gaps and drive requirements for new or improved test tools, simulation environments, and test frameworks; manage relationships with internal tools teams and external vendors to evolve Torc’s simulation and virtual testing toolchains.
  • Review simulation results and communicate V&V status, risks, and findings to engineering leadership and stakeholders through dashboards and test reports.

What you’ll need to succeed:

Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field with 6+ years of experience, or a Master's degree with 4+ years of experience.

  • Experience leading virtual testing and simulation of perception and autonomous vehicle behavior.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), and ISO 8800, and how they apply to simulation-based verification and validation.
  • Experience defining test strategy and overseeing the development of simulation scenarios and Test cases with traceability to requirements.
  • Familiarity with scenario-based testing and the ASAM OpenSCENARIO standard, especially Abstract and/or Logical Scenarios.
  • Technical depth in Python and SQL for data analysis.
  • Experience with software and system troubleshooting and problem-solving with specific focus on system-level analysis, fault isolation, and identification.
  • Working knowledge of probability, statistics, and linear algebra, including their use in coverage and statistical validation arguments.
  • Experience managing cross-functional partners, internal tools teams, and external simulation vendors.
  • Experience effectively reporting progress and test results to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Familiar with the state-of-the-art approaches of autonomous vehicle validation.

Bonus Points!

ADAS verification and validation experience.

  • Experience contributing to safety cases or safety assurance arguments, including simulation tool qualification (e.g., ISO 26262 tool confidence).
  • Experience with developing & validating sensor models, traffic vehicle models, and vehicle dynamics models.
  • Experience evaluating and interacting with ROS based systems.
  • Experience hiring, building, and scaling engineering teams.

What began in 2005 as Torc Technologies, a venture by a group of Virginia Tech graduate students, has evolved into a leading name in autonomous vehicle technology. The mission from the outset was to continue their collegiate work on autonomous vehicle software, initially focusing on Tele-Operated Robotic Controls (TORC) and developing Level 4 autonomous technology. A significant early milestone came in 2007 when Torc, in partnership with Virginia Tech, secured third place in the DARPA Urban Challenge. This achievement involved their Ford Escape, 'Odin,' autonomously navigating 60 miles of urban and off-road environments. The company's journey continued with impactful projects, including a 2010 partnership with Virginia Tech for the National Federation of the Blind's Blind Driver Challenge, which earned them the National Instruments' 2010 Application of the Year. This project saw a blind driver independently operate Torc's modified Ford Escape on the Daytona Speedway in 2011. Torc's expertise also extended to defense, developing autonomous solutions like the Ground Unmanned Support Surrogate (GUSS) to assist military personnel. Over the years, Torc has been involved in various defense and heavy equipment applications, and participated in the DARPA Robotics Challenge. A pivotal moment arrived in March 2019 when Daimler AG, through Daimler Trucks North America, acquired a majority stake in Torc Robotics. This partnership shifted Torc's primary focus to commercializing autonomous trucks for long-haul applications in the United States. Torc is now an independent subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG. The company has since expanded its operations, opening an engineering office in Austin, Texas, and a Technology and Development Center in Stuttgart, Germany in 2022, as well as facilities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Montreal, Canada. Torc continues to advance its 'physical AI,' enabling self-driving trucks to perceive, understand, and act in the real world, with a commercial launch targeted for 2027.
