Job purpose
Promotes pupil attendance in grades nine through twelve. Acts as a liaison to schools, police, community resources, parents and students. Locates truant students, visits student?s homes, conferences with parents and confers with school and police personnel. The City-Wide Truancy Officer will have flexible scheduling and/or compensatory time may be arranged.
Duties and responsibilities
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Monitor and support student progress to improve retention rates
- Identify at-risk students, implement retention strategies, collaborate with teachers and guardians to ensure academic success
- Creates and sends truancy letters
- Schedule AIT meetings with the AIT team
- Files all truancy paperwork
- Knowledge of Education Codes and attendance laws for the State of Ohio.
- Responsible for contacting students and families by phone and/or home visits.
- Prepares a yearly report of the Truancy Program for the Board.
- Locates truant students, patrols campuses, parks and streets to maintain attendance.
- Redirect truant students to school sites, as feasible.
- Confers with students, parents, and school administrators.
- Checks students or visitors who appear to be loitering on or near any school campus.
- Reports to law enforcement agencies any acts that contribute to the delinquency or injury of students.
- Reports to school resource officers on which students to cite for truancy.
- Works with appropriate law enforcement agencies to mediate with parents who are contributing to a student?s truancy.
- Works with students in grades 9-12 who fall under the laws for compulsory school attendance, school administrators, staff, and other school districts and agencies as appropriate.
- Attends Student Intervention Team meetings at each school on a monthly bases and obeys subpoenas for court appearances.
- Deals with confidential issues concerning personal family crisis, unhealthy living conditions and personal safety issues involving young children.
- Refers students and families to appropriate community resources.
- Verifies parent residency to determine legal residency of student, as needed/required
- Responsible for overall retention efforts of students at the school
- Attends district and site school safety meetings.
- Contributes expertise to district and site school safety plans and procedures.
- Perform home visits as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned
