Job description

Applied Ecology, Inc., an environmental and engineering consulting business with a rapidly expanding footprint, is seeking a highly motivated and energetic experienced Utility Locate Technician to join our growing team. AEI has three offices located in Florida and is a regional leader in geospatial services, water resources, natural resources, and environmental remediation and contamination services. This position will serve our Tampa area clients and is field based.

Applied Ecology is seeking an experienced candidate for this position (3 years of experience minimum). A Utility Locator identifies, locates, and marks the location of 811 subsurface utilities in order to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to construction excavation activities. An employee in this class performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled activities to facilitate safe excavation. These activities include locating and marking existing City-owned underground infrastructure focusing on the water lines.

As the Utility Locator usually works alone, an employee in this class is expected to exercise considerable initiative in moving efficiently through the day's work assignments. Also, considerable independent judgment must be used, as the accuracy of the locate depends heavily upon how well the readings from the equipment are interpreted. An employee in this class must also be able to read and interpret the electronic quarter section and plat maps to facilitate locating utility lines. The major objectives are quality, accuracy, thoroughness, and ability to follow instructions.

The position is contingent on being able to pass a background check and possessing valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
