Under general supervision of the Crew Leader, the Water or Wastewater Technician performs maintenance of the City’s water production and distribution system or the City’s wastewater collection systems and facilities, including cleaning, installing, and repairing sewer lines and maintenance on lift stations . Requires on-call work, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. May work with other divisions of Public Works in cross-training exercises.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
WATER
- Operate and maintain the groundwater well sites, pump stations, and water distribution system in a manner as to produce the safest and best-tasting water, as well as ensure no violations of any State or Federal regulations occur;
- Participates in performing a wide variety of activities in support of water collection activities, which includes fixing and testing fire hydrants and water meters as well as investigating water leaks;
- Periodically inspect all groundwater well sites and record miscellaneous data, such as elapsed time meters, flow meters, and pressure gauges, in the appropriate records;
- Maintain and repair water lines throughout the distribution system; Perform both preventive and restorative maintenance as needed to keep all pumping and storage equipment in proper working order.
WASTEWATER
- Maintain wastewater collection systems and facilities, including cleaning, installations, and repairs of sewer lines; and maintenance on lift stations;
- Responsible for assisting in the complete operations of the wastewater treatment facilities in a manner that ensures safe and properly treated wastewater in accordance with standards, legal requirements, and City policy.
- Check all facilities daily and chemical levels;
- Operate concrete saws, portable concrete mixers, air compressors, pneumatic drills and tampers, hand tools and gas power trimmers, track loaders, trucks, backhoes, pump trucks, and dump trucks;
- Compact base course materials, saw cut area;
- Maintain, fuel, stock, and clean vehicles, equipment, and tools to ensure proper working conditions;
- Maintain barricades (including lights), traffic cones and other safety equipment;
- Keep streets and drainage areas clear of debris during emergency situations and repairs, including after hours;
- Install and repair water lines and remove sewer chokes; Perform maintenance on lift stations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma or GED;
- Must be 18 years or older;
- A valid Texas class C driver’s license is required with a good driving record;
- No experience is required as we will train you;
- If no previous experience, a Class D water license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) must be obtained within 12 months of eligibility. If existing experience, at the direction of the supervisor, either a Class C water distribution license or Class D water distribution license will be required within 12 months after eligibility. Eligibility is defined as the completion of TCEQ-required classes necessary to test. Valid Class "C" Wastewater Collections certification through TCEQ or ability to obtain within 2 years. (For Wastewater Technician)
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Valid Class "C" Ground Treatment or Wastewater Collections Operations Certification through TCEQ;
- 2 years of utility or plumbing experience preferred;
- Knowledge of plumbing tools and material use;
- Experience and knowledge of basic construction methods and a wide variety of equipment used in the construction or repair of wastewater collection systems;
- Experience and knowledge of testing and sampling of wastewater;
- Confined space or trench safety knowledge or certification; Experience and knowledge with a wide variety of basic equipment safety and operation standards and procedures;
NOTE
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable and proven proficiency levels in the above-required knowledge, skills, abilities, education, training, or licensing could be considered as a possible substitute for the above industry-specified training or experience requirements for this position.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Very heavy work. Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
- Ability to work inside and outside, exposure to varying weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, temperature swings, rain, etc.), exposure to the sun, exposure to moving objects, operating assigned vehicles, movement on uneven terrain and city areas;
