Your new role

We are seeking an experienced Database Reliability Engineer to take ownership of PostgreSQL database environments within AWS. Combining traditional database administration with modern DevOps and infrastructure engineering practices, you will help ensure database platforms remain secure, highly available and optimised for performance. Working alongside developers, DevOps engineers and Product Owners, you will play a key role in database automation, cloud infrastructure, disaster recovery and ongoing platform improvements.

Responsibilities

• Manage, maintain and optimise AWS Aurora PostgreSQL databases.
• Design and implement database solutions using AWS CDK and CI/CD pipelines.
• Automate database infrastructure and deployment processes.
• Manage PostGIS extensions and PostgreSQL trusted language extensions.
• Develop and maintain disaster recovery processes, including automated testing.
• Monitor database performance and identify optimisation opportunities.
• Implement effective backup, recovery and data integrity strategies.
• Troubleshoot production database issues, including queries, indexing and access permissions.
• Support database migrations, upgrades and legacy system transitions.
• Collaborate with technical teams to improve platform reliability and operational efficiency.
• Support planned system cutovers and go-live activities when required.

Requirements

• Strong commercial experience administering PostgreSQL databases.
• Hands-on experience with AWS Aurora PostgreSQL and AWS RDS.
• Practical experience with AWS CDK, CloudFormation or Terraform in production environments.
• Solid understanding of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure automation.
• Experience working with PostGIS and geospatial databases.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot database performance and production incidents.
• Experience with backup, disaster recovery and database migrations.
• Scripting experience using Python or Bash.
• Understanding of database security and compliance best practices.
• Strong communication, problem-solving and collaboration skills.
• Experience working in Agile environments, ideally using SAFe.
