Play a key role in the data development and delivery as part of our Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) project, here at Stats NZ. The IDI is a world first in leading the integration of datasets to link information from key Government agencies, surveys and NGO’s, to translate into better social outcomes for all New Zealanders. In this newly created fixed term role, the Senior Cloud DevOps Engineer will be part of a multidisciplinary team playing a pivotal role in developing, building and supporting quality initiatives within the product offering and the underlying platform and tools. Your skills knowledge and positive attitude will be leveraged to mentor and contribute to the evolving work within the modernising IDI project.
The ideal candidate will be able to apply a holistic enterprise-wide perspective while working closely with project and business stakeholders to understand their priorities and provide leadership and guidance on DevOps practices, delivery of value to the project and a focus on automation and value added initiatives across our platforms. This will allow the IDI to remain robust, agile, secure, and fit for purpose, supporting both operational delivery and future capability uplift.
The scope of this role includes:
- Mentor and provide guidance across the team and project to drive consistency in processes and foster a collaborative work environment.
- Work in collaboration with software delivery teams to automate and streamline cloud infrastructure and monitoring toolsets.
- Stay ahead of industry trends, bringing best practice to CI/CD, automation and observability toolsets.
- Provide support for core platforms under the watch of the team and work collaboratively with other teams within the technology services model.
- Understand and contribute to the IDI/ Stats roadmap for enterprise alignment.
- Advocate for a “automate everything”, “measure everything” approach and implement cost effective solutions for software delivery.
- Support the team during incidents, outages and seasonal demands.
- Share knowledge and expertise on Stat’s software products regarding service criticality, risks and business impacts.
- Build strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders through effective and timely communication, quickly building credibility and trust.

Our ideal candidate will have solid experience as a DevOps Engineer or working within Platform/Digital engineering. You will bring an innovative mindset, with a willingness to challenge the status quo and explore new and better ways of working.
What you will bring to the role:
- Senior level background ideally from a large, complex environments.
- Demonstrated ability to foster partnerships across the project and the business while providing practical solutions and paths forward.
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts and deliver detailed information in plain language.
- Proven problem-solving skills with a priority on automation and a “automation first” mindset.
- Proficiency with automation and configuration management tools, encompassing traditional scripts and specialised tools.
- Solid experience with cloud resources and services including AwS and Microsoft Azure.
- Demonstrated experience with observability and CI/CD toolsets.
- In-depth understanding of technology service delivery, project management, scalability and the software development lifecycle.
- Strong knowledge of current development and security tools/ techniques, coupled with an awareness of technology trends.
- Experience developing migration and transition strategies that balance technical improvement with operational continuity.
- Possess excellent judgement and sound decision-making skills to deliver high-quality results within timelines.

Starting salary for this position will be based on the successful candidate's skills, experience, and alignment with the role. A competitive salary and KiwiSaver contribution are offered.
