Job description

Aviation Architect

Bring your experience. Find your people. Build what matters. Help Build What’s Next in Aviation.

At Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) we believe great work happens when talented people have the trust, resources, and support to do their best work.

We’re looking for an Aviation Architect who wants more than a role on a massive airport project. This is an opportunity to join an established Architectural Team with a growing aviation practice and help build that practice from the ground up. Our work today is focused on regional airports, including terminal buildings, hangars, administration and operations facilities, renovations, and other aviation-related infrastructure. Over time, we expect that platform to grow—and we want the person in this role to grow with it.

If you’re an architect who enjoys working closely with engineers, solving real-world problems, talking with clients, and seeing projects move from concept through construction, this could be a great fit.

What You’ll Do

You’ll work as a key member of our architecture team, partnering closely with our aviation engineers and other A/E professionals to deliver thoughtful, practical projects for airport clients.

Your work may include:

  • Leading architectural design for regional airport projects, including terminals, hangars, administration buildings, maintenance facilities, and renovations.
  • Working side-by-side with aviation, civil, structural, MEP, and other engineering disciplines to develop coordinated solutions.
  • Taking projects from early planning and programming through design, permitting, bidding, and construction administration.
  • Developing concepts, presentations, drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Participating in client meetings and helping translate airport needs into buildable solutions.
  • Developing an understanding of FAA, airport, building code, accessibility, and other applicable requirements.
  • Visiting project sites and working directly with owners, contractors, and consultants.
  • Helping identify opportunities with existing and prospective aviation clients.
  • Contributing to the growth of our aviation practice, not simply executing work that has already been won.

This Role Has Room to Grow

We’re intentionally building this practice with the long term in mind.

You won’t be walking into a fully built-out aviation architecture department with layers of management between you and the work. You’ll have the opportunity to help define what our aviation practice becomes.

As the practice grows, we see opportunities for this person to take on increasing responsibility for:

  • Client relationships and business development
  • Project and team leadership
  • Aviation market strategy
  • Mentoring and developing architectural staff
  • Building repeat work with airport clients
  • Pursuing larger and more complex aviation projects

Our immediate focus is on regional airports and the facilities that keep them operating. We believe that is a great place to build a strong aviation practice—and a strong career. As our relationships and capabilities grow, so can the size and complexity of the airports and projects we pursue.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is both a good architect and a good teammate.

You’ll likely be a strong fit if you have:

  • A professional degree in Architecture.
  • Architectural licensure, or a clear path toward licensure.
  • 5+ years of architectural experience, preferably with aviation, transportation, public-sector, or other technically complex projects.
  • Experience taking projects through multiple phases of design and documentation.
  • Strong Revit and/or AutoCAD skills.
  • An understanding of building codes, accessibility requirements, and construction documentation.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers and other disciplines.
  • The ability to manage your own work while contributing to a larger project team.
  • An interest in working directly with clients and helping develop new opportunities.
  • A practical, collaborative approach to design and problem solving.

Aviation experience is highly valued, but we’re open to the right architect coming from an adjacent market—particularly someone with experience in transportation, public facilities, industrial, institutional, or other technically demanding project types.

The Person We Hope to Find

The right person probably doesn't need to be the person who has already designed the world's largest airport terminal.

In fact, you may be looking for something different from that.

You’re someone who wants to be close to the work. You like figuring things out with engineers. You enjoy talking to clients. You’re comfortable wearing a few different hats. And you’re excited by the idea of joining a growing practice where your contribution can directly influence where the business goes next.

You may already know aviation inside and out—or you may have strong architectural fundamentals and be ready to make aviation your specialty.

Most importantly, you’re looking for a place where there is room to build, room to lead, and room to grow.

Where You’ll Work

This is primarily an office-based role, with opportunities to get out into the field and stay connected to the projects and people you’re serving. In our GMC Atlanta Office, you will work in amazing diverse culture, along with having access to an onsite gym and a café.

Travel: Up to 20%, including project site visits, client meetings, professional development, and other project-related activities.

Fieldwork may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, temperatures, construction environments, pollutants, chemicals, insects, and other site conditions. Appropriate protective clothing and equipment will be provided and required as appropriate.

The role also includes periods of desk and computer work, as well as occasional bending, twisting, crouching, and other physical movements. Employees may occasionally need to lift up to 25 pounds.

Why Join Us?

  • Build something: Help shape a growing aviation architecture practice rather than simply inherit an established one.
  • Work across disciplines: Collaborate directly with experienced aviation engineers and the broader A/E team.
  • Have client exposure: Build relationships with airport owners and decision-makers.
  • See your work get built: Work on practical projects with tangible impact on the communities and airports we serve.
  • Grow with the practice: Your role and leadership opportunities can expand as our aviation portfolio does.
  • Make an impact: In a growing practice, your ideas and initiative matter.

Interested?

If you’re an architect who is excited about aviation, enjoys working with engineers, and wants the opportunity to help build something rather than simply step into something already built, we’d like to hear from you.

Why GMC?

At GMC, we believe communities are built by people—not companies. We’re one of the Southeast’s largest privately held architecture and engineering firms, but our size isn’t what defines us. Our people do.

We bring architects, designers, engineers, planners, environmental professionals, surveyors, and disaster recovery experts together to solve complex challenges and create better outcomes for the communities we serve. Our work touches everyday life—from schools, parks, hospitals, and commercial developments to clean water, safe streets, resilient environments, and everything in between.

And while the work matters, how we work matters just as much.

We’re guided by four values:

  • Quality — We care deeply about the work we put into the world.
  • Integrity — We do the right thing for our clients, colleagues, and communities.
  • Creativity — We believe the best solutions come from curiosity, collaboration, and fresh thinking.
  • Care — We invest in our people, our clients, and the places we’re fortunate to serve.

At GMC, your experience has a place, your ideas have a voice, and your leadership can make a difference. Come build something meaningful with us.

GMC is an Equal Opportunity Employer, including individuals with disabilities and veterans.
