Business Unit Control Manager
The Business Unit Control Manager role ensures adequate identification and management of risk and control inventories for the assigned business areas. This role is responsible for developing effective relationships with operational leaders and overseeing the design and implementation of the control environment including overseeing compliance with the Bank's risk appetite, understanding strategy and capturing risk measurement, and thoroughly executing effective risk assessments. This role contributes to and presents reports on the overall control environment including any appropriate findings and recommendations for the business units and senior management.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Executes and oversees the Risk and Control Self-Assessment process to identify, assess, record and challenge the completeness of risks identified and sufficiency of controls implemented to mitigate the associated risks for all assigned businesses.
- Works with business units subject matter experts to understand the full inventory of risks and ensure the control environment provides effective mitigation utilizing leading practices for business activities to control various risks by researching all risk management policies, procedures, limits and guidelines.
- Monitors the business unit key performance and risk indicators as well as adherence to risk appetite.
- Leads control gap identification, partnering with control and process owners to recommend holistic corrective actions and improvements while providing check challenge to ensure appropriate escalation in accordance with the Issue Management Program.
- Evaluates business unit reporting policies and procedures currently in place within the organization to identify gaps and weaknesses in the control environment.
- Establishes effective relationships with assigned business unit leaders providing credible challenges, valued feedback, and support in relation to improving the overall control environment. Understands the business that is being supported and stays on top of current issues, concerns, technological advancements, and associated risk and control options.
- Periodically evaluates business unit policies, procedures, processes, and related documentation to ensure it is maintained by the line of business and associated risks and controls are updated in a timely manner.
- Manages performance of team through regular, timely feedback as well as the formal performance review process to ensure delivery of exceptional products and engagement, motivation, and development of team.
Educational Requirements
- University (Degree) Preferred
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of recent experience performing and managing Risk & Control Self-Assessments (RCSAs) within a financial services or regulated environment.
- 5+ years of operational risk, compliance risk, technology risk, or enterprise risk management experience, including risk identification, control evaluation, and issue remediation.
- Previous people leadership experience with responsibility for coaching, performance management, and development of team members.
Preferred Qualifications
- 7+ years of risk management experience with demonstrated expertise in RCSA execution, control testing, issue management, and risk governance.
- Strong knowledge of banking regulations, operational risk frameworks, risk appetite monitoring, key risk indicators (KRIs), and control environment management.
