The Engineering Manager is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operation of the Engineering Department, ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable maintenance of all hotel facilities, equipment, and guest areas. This position provides hands-on leadership to the engineering team and plays a key role in maintaining the luxury standards expected at Grand Hyatt Vail.
Due to the demands of a resort environment, this role requires a strong on-site presence with a focus on providing leadership coverage during evenings, weekends, holidays, and other peak business periods. The Engineering Manager serves as a critical operational leader, responding to maintenance concerns, supporting hotel operations, and ensuring exceptional guest and colleague experiences.
Essential Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise, coach, and develop engineering colleagues to ensure departmental goals and hotel standards are met.
- Assist with hiring, training, performance management, scheduling, and employee engagement initiatives.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and preventative maintenance.
- Lead by example and provide hands-on support when operational needs require.
Operations & Maintenance
- Oversee daily maintenance activities involving guestrooms, public spaces, restaurant outlets, spa facilities, back-of-house areas, and exterior grounds.
- Ensure timely response to guest maintenance requests and operational work orders.
- Support the implementation and execution of preventative maintenance programs.
- Monitor building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, life safety, and mechanical equipment.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with Hyatt standards, local regulations, and safety requirements.
PM & Weekend Leadership Coverage
- Provide consistent management presence during evening and weekend shifts to support hotel operations.
- Serve as the primary Engineering leadership contact during assigned PM, weekend, and holiday coverage periods.
- Coordinate resources and respond to urgent maintenance issues impacting guests or operations.
- Partner closely with Rooms, Food & Beverage, Security, and other departments to address operational needs.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to emergency situations as required.
Financial & Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist in monitoring departmental expenses, inventory, and purchasing activities.
- Support capital improvement projects and vendor management.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspections, and compliance documentation.
- Contribute to annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of engineering or facilities maintenance experience in hospitality, resort, commercial, or related environments.
- Prior supervisory or management experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical systems, and life-safety requirements.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex facility issues and prioritize multiple demands.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in maintenance management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Schedule Requirements
To support the operational needs of a year-round luxury resort, this position requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other peak business periods. Regular PM and weekend leadership coverage is an essential function of the role.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk the property for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to work in various indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.
