MARKETING BUSINESS PERFORMANCE MANAGER
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Marketing Business Performance Manager helps Marketing leadership understand business performance and use available data and reporting to guide decisions. This position maintains visibility into campaign performance, promotional effectiveness, customer engagement, loyalty results, marketing expenditures, vendor performance, and return on marketing investment.
The Marketing Business Performance Manager works with enterprise data and analysis produced or validated by Finance and the company’s analytics team. The role defines Marketing’s business questions and reporting requirements, reviews and interprets approved reporting, identifies relevant trends and gaps, and translates findings into clear recommendations and actions.
This position does not own enterprise data governance, enterprise analytical methodologies, validated datasets, or the technical production of advanced analysis. Those responsibilities remain with the appropriate Finance and enterprise analytics teams.
The position works closely with Marketing, Finance, Merchandising, Operations, Digital, Loyalty, IT, Campaign Strategy, Content, and external marketing partners to establish appropriate performance measures, improve business visibility, and support timely, informed marketing decisions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
MARKETING PERFORMANCE AND BUSINESS INSIGHTS
- Review and interpret campaign, promotional, customer, loyalty, sales, and channel reporting to identify meaningful trends, opportunities, risks, and areas requiring attention.
- Translate analytical findings and business reporting into concise insights, recommendations, and presentations for Marketing leadership and executive management.
- Maintain visibility into marketing performance against established objectives, KPIs, budgets, and business expectations.
- Identify significant performance variances or emerging trends and recommend appropriate follow-up or corrective action.
- Partner with Marketing stakeholders to establish measurable program objectives and define the business questions that reporting and analysis should address.
- Support consistent post-campaign and post-promotion reviews to evaluate results, document lessons learned, and improve future activity.
- Assess campaign and promotional performance using available measures such as sales, transactions, units, margin, customer participation, redemption, conversion, engagement, and incremental impact.
- Distinguish between activity metrics and meaningful business outcomes when evaluating Marketing performance.
- Clearly communicate limitations, assumptions, data gaps, or unresolved questions that may affect the interpretation of results.
REPORTING REQUIREMENTS AND PERFORMANCE VISIBILITY
- Define Marketing’s reporting requirements and work with Finance, enterprise analytics, IT, and other data owners to obtain timely, accurate, decision-ready reporting.
- Maintain business-facing Marketing dashboards, scorecards, recaps, and recurring performance summaries using approved data sources and validated reporting.
- Review reporting for completeness, consistency, usability, and alignment with agreed KPI definitions and business objectives.
- Partner with the appropriate data owners to resolve questions involving definitions, methodology, data quality, or reporting discrepancies.
- Help establish standardized Marketing KPI definitions, performance benchmarks, reporting formats, and recap processes in partnership with Finance and enterprise analytics.
- Identify gaps in available reporting and clearly document the business need, required information, timing, and intended use.
- Coordinate reporting inputs for Marketing planning, business reviews, executive updates, and company reporting.
- Maintain documentation of Marketing reporting requirements, approved KPI definitions, reporting schedules, source owners, assumptions, and business uses.
- Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, timeliness, and usability of recurring Marketing reporting.
CROSS FUNCTIONAL BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP
- Serve as Marketing’s primary business partner for performance reporting and interpretation.
- Partner with Finance and the enterprise analytics team on KPI definitions, campaign measurement, promotional performance, customer and loyalty insights, and marketing return on investment.
- Work with Campaign Strategy, Content, Loyalty, Digital, Merchandising, Operations, IT, and other departments to establish measurable objectives and clarify required inputs.
- Define clear business questions and reporting requirements before campaigns, promotions, or strategic initiatives launch.
- Ensure that Marketing leadership understands the implications of available reporting and any limitations that affect decision-making.
- Collaborate with Finance and other business partners to review promotional results, financial impacts, vendor performance, and investment recommendations.
- Support Marketing leadership with information and recommendations for business cases, strategic initiatives, budget decisions, and vendor evaluations.
- Escalate material reporting delays, data gaps, or unresolved ownership issues that may prevent Marketing from making timely decisions.
- Build effective working relationships with internal stakeholders and external marketing partners.
MARKETING BUDGET AND SPEND VISIBILITY
- Maintain visibility into the Marketing budget, committed spend, invoices, actual expenditures, forecasted spending, and remaining budget.
- Track Marketing expenditures and commitments using approved financial information and processes.
- Partner with Finance and Accounts Payable to identify variances, reconcile expenditures, resolve discrepancies, and support budget forecasting.
- Prepare clear Marketing budget summaries and variance explanations for leadership review.
- Help ensure that planned programs, vendor commitments, invoices, and actual expenditures are reflected accurately in Marketing’s financial reporting.
- Identify financial risks, unexpected variances, missing commitments, or unresolved invoices requiring leadership attention.
- Provide information and analysis to support investment decisions, business cases, contract discussions, and program prioritization.
VENDOR PERFORMANCE AND BUSINESS EVALUATION
- Review vendor deliverables, service levels, spending, results, and performance against agreed objectives.
- Maintain business-facing vendor performance summaries and support regular vendor business reviews.
- Evaluate whether vendor activity is producing meaningful Marketing or business value.
- Identify performance gaps, duplicated capabilities, underutilized services, or opportunities to improve cost-effectiveness.
- Provide information and recommendations to support vendor renewals, renegotiations, replacements, or discontinuations.
- Support the evaluation of proposed marketing partners by comparing capabilities, expected outcomes, pricing, strategic fit, and measurement plans.
- Partner with Finance, Legal, Procurement, IT, and other stakeholders as appropriate during vendor reviews and evaluations.
EXECUTIVE AND MANAGEMENT REPORTING
- Prepare concise, decision-ready Marketing performance summaries for leadership meetings, business reviews, and executive reporting.
- Coordinate and review Marketing inputs for recurring company reports, including promotional results, customer activity, program performance, budget status, and key business implications.
- Ensure that executive reporting clearly communicates what happened, why it matters, what remains unknown, and what action is recommended.
- Adapt complex information for technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Maintain consistency between detailed Marketing reporting and executive-level summaries.
- Respond to leadership questions by identifying the appropriate information, coordinating with data owners, and providing clear business context.
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
- Identify opportunities to improve Marketing reporting, workflow efficiency, budget visibility, vendor oversight, and decision-making.
- Develop practical recommendations based on performance results, stakeholder feedback, and business needs.
- Promote the consistent use of approved KPIs, reporting practices, and measurement frameworks across Marketing.
- Help improve Marketing planning and recap processes so that objectives, measures, inputs, and ownership are established in advance.
- Identify manual or duplicative work that may be simplified or automated in partnership with the appropriate technical teams.
- Develop and maintain templates, documentation, calendars, and operating procedures that support consistent Marketing performance management.
- Stay informed about relevant marketing measurement, customer analytics, loyalty, business intelligence, and retail performance practices.
- Assist with special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned by the Vice President Marketing.
OWNERSHIP AND PARTNERSHIP MODEL

The Marketing Business Performance Manager Owns:
- Defining Marketing’s business questions and reporting requirements.
- Interpreting approved reporting and analysis for Marketing.
- Maintaining visibility into Marketing performance.
- Identifying relevant trends, gaps, risks, and opportunities.
- Translating findings into recommendations and actions.
- Coordinating Marketing performance reviews and recaps.
- Maintaining Marketing budget and vendor performance visibility.
- Communicating Marketing’s reporting needs, timing requirements, and business priorities.
- Ensuring that Marketing leadership understands the business implications of available information.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Analytics, Finance, Economics, or a related field preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE
- Approximately four to seven years of progressive experience in marketing performance, marketing analytics, customer insights, business intelligence, financial analysis, marketing planning, or a related discipline.
- Experience interpreting marketing, customer, sales, promotional, loyalty, financial, or business-performance reporting.
- Experience translating data and reporting into business insights and recommendations.
- Experience preparing dashboards, scorecards, campaign recaps, recurring reports, or executive-level performance summaries.
- Experience partnering with Finance, analytics, IT, or other teams that own underlying data and technical reporting.
- Experience supporting marketing budgets, vendor evaluations, or investment decisions preferred.
- Retail, grocery, loyalty, CRM, consumer marketing, or promotional-performance experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel or comparable spreadsheet and data-analysis tools.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to interpret large or complex datasets and reporting.
- Experience with business intelligence, dashboarding, visualization, CRM, loyalty, or marketing-performance platforms preferred.
- Strong understanding of marketing KPIs, campaign measurement, customer engagement, promotional effectiveness, and return on investment.
- Ability to distinguish between marketing activity metrics and meaningful business outcomes.
- Ability to translate complex findings into clear business implications and actionable recommendations.
- Ability to ask informed questions and appropriately challenge assumptions, definitions, or conclusions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, responsible interpretation of information.
- Excellent organizational and project-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to present findings clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across departments and with external partners.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through electronic communication.
- Ability to review and interpret detailed reports and information for extended periods.
- Occasional travel to Gelson’s stores, meetings, vendor locations, or other business-related locations may be required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Primarily office-based in a professional corporate environment.
- Regular interaction with Marketing, Finance, enterprise analytics, Merchandising, Operations, IT, Digital, Loyalty, store teams, and external vendors.
- Occasional visits to Gelson’s stores and other company locations may be required.
- May require occasional work outside normal business hours to support campaigns, reporting deadlines, meetings, or other business needs.
Salary Range: $77,000 to $94,600
