Job description

Job Summary

We’re looking for a Mechanical Design Automation Engineer to help design, deploy, and continuously improve robotic automation solutions across Chromalloy’s global manufacturing network. You’ll create practical, production-ready systems that strengthen safety, quality, productivity, and process consistency in critical aerospace manufacturing and repair operations.

Work That Matter

At Chromalloy, your work directly supports aviation safety and reliability. Our teams repair and manufacture critical aerospace components used across the global aviation industry. Whether you're improving processes, supporting operations, solving technical challenges, or driving business performance, your contributions help keep aircraft flying safely around the world.

Location: Oldsmar, FL

Travel: Up to 25% as needed

Schedule: On-site

What You’ll Be Doing

Support the mechanical design and development of robotic automation cells for aerospace manufacturing and repair operations.

Develop work cell layouts, robotic end-of-arm tooling (EOAT), fixtures, part presentation systems, safety guarding, and process-specific tooling.

Perform concept development, feasibility studies, design reviews, and risk assessments for new automation opportunities.

Create detailed 3D models, mechanical drawings, assemblies, and technical documentation using CAD software.

Design flexible, reusable tooling and automation concepts that can be deployed across multiple facilities.

Partner with manufacturing and production teams to automate welding, inspection, masking, blending, material handling, surface preparation, and other processes.

Troubleshoot mechanical and process-related issues during equipment integration, implementation, and startup.

Support ergonomic evaluations, machine safety reviews, system validation, and process qualification activities.

Contribute to automation design standards, best practices, and reusable system architectures.

What We’re Looking For

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

Experience designing robotic work cells from concept through production deployment.

Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software; Siemens NX is preferred.

Strong knowledge of automation, control systems, robotics principles, and robotic work cell design.

Experience designing robotic tooling and EOAT, automation fixtures, part handling systems, safety guarding, or automated manufacturing equipment.

Understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM).

Familiarity with industrial robotics platforms, machine vision, laser systems, sensors, and industrial automation equipment.

Knowledge of machine safety standards and risk assessment methodologies.

Experience working directly with manufacturing operations and production teams.

Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently across multiple sites and shifting priorities.

Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% to support automation builds and deployments.

Nice to Have

Experience with aerospace manufacturing or repair operations.

Knowledge of FANUC or ABB robotic platforms.

Experience automating welding, coating, inspection, machining, or material finishing processes.

Experience with additive manufacturing design principles.

Exposure to PLCs, HMI systems, industrial networking, and controls integration.

Experience with simulation software, offline robotic programming, or digital twin development.

Experience using AI tools to accelerate work.

Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma exposure.

Physical Requirements

Work in a production floor environment with ventilation, climate control, moderate lighting, and moderate noise.

Use finger dexterity to type, adjust, move, handle, operate, install, attach, remove, apply, grasp, manipulate, and measure.

Occasionally move, transport, rotate, reach, pull, twist, adjust position, push, stoop, bend, and crouch.

Lift up to 40 pounds
