The New World Symphony (NWS) is a laboratory for generating new ideas about the way music is taught, presented, and experienced. Under the direction of Artistic Director Stéphane Denève, its unique fellowship program trains music school graduates for leadership roles in the field of classical music. Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Communications plays a pivotal role in developing, coordinating, and distributing internal and external communications to uphold New World Symphony’s (NWS’s) brand, mission and strategic objectives. This role serves as a cross-departmental liaison to ensure accurate and timely management of distribution of information and record keeping.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage the Communications team content calendar and updates
- Manage all third-party content developers, partners and program annotators
- Create and execute NWS’s blog calendar and content based on and in line with the season and content strategy set by the SVP for Communications
- Review, edit and approve copy for email messaging, including marketing promotions, recurring newsletters and audience notifications
- In collaboration with the Web Administrator and Developer, manage and direct all content updates for the NWS website, microsites, mobile application and partner listings
- Design, edit and print all in-house programs
- Oversee sponsor and donor recognition in print, online and mobile applications, working closely with the Development team to maintain files of current logos and instructions
- Oversee execution of and updates to content strategy for the NWC digital displays
- Act as project manager for Communications team tasks in executing NWS BLUE (Build, Learn, Understand, Experiment) Projects
- Maintain database of shared, approved organizational materials as an institutional resource (i.e., guest artist and Fellow materials)
- Manage internal and external photo requests
- Manage all invoices and financial tracking for printed and program materials
- Maintain Communications/Public Relations sharepoint site and ensure access to archival materials in coordination with Archivist
- Attend and participate in weekly Communications team meetings
- Provide on-site event, staff and press assistance as needed
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field and a minimum of five to seven years of relevant experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent written, editorial and verbal communication skills required
- Fluency in English is required; fluency in Spanish is desired
- Highly organized with acute attention to detail and quality
- Ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously in a demanding, multi-activity work environment
- Ability to interact effectively and respectfully as a team player with a variety of personalities
- Proficiency with content management systems
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and content management systems
- Working knowledge of the classical music environment
- Passion for the mission of NWS and commitment to its values of community, respect, excellence, accountability, and trust
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends
