Director of Operations Job Summary

The Director of Operations is responsible for the overall leadership and strategic direction of warehouse operations, ensuring efficient, safe, and cost-effective handling of inbound, outbound, and inventory management processes. This role will oversee all aspects of warehouse execution and quality across receiving, put away, picking, shipping, labor planning, equipment, and safety. The ideal candidate brings operational expertise and a continuous improvement mindset to drive results and service excellence.
Direction of Operations Job Description and Duties
- Lead day-to-day warehouse operations across multiple shifts and departments (receiving, putaway, inventory, picking, and shipping).
- Drive key performance indicators (KPIs) including productivity, inventory accuracy, order accuracy, on-time shipments, and labor efficiency.
- Develop and implement strategic initiatives to improve throughput, reduce costs, and enhance service levels.
- Oversee warehouse layout and storage strategies, ensuring space is optimized.
- Oversee labor planning, staffing, and scheduling in alignment with annual budget and P&L statements.
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of managers, supervisors, and associates to foster a high-performance culture.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety compliance and company operating procedures.
- Partner with sales, customer service, and procurement teams to align priorities and solve problems quickly.
- Manage budgets for equipment, technology, and process improvements.
- Monitor and report operational performance to executive leadership with actionable insights.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and accountability
- Assist the executive team in the execution of expansive projects, i.e. new branch startups and branch moves.
Director of Operations Qualifications
- 7-10+ years of progressive leadership in warehousing/distribution environments, including multi-shift or high-volume facilities.
- 5+ years of experience managing drivers (Class A CDL preferred).
- Deep knowledge of warehousing best practices, inventory control, KPIs, and safety standards.
- Proficient in use of WMS and ERP systems (Epicor/Eclipse preferred)
- Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to perform light to heavy physical tasks; able to lift 50 lbs. safely
- Ability to proficiently operate a variety of powered industrial trucks, and able to complete in-house forklift & safety program
- Ability to travel on occasion to other facilities
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a warehouse environment (exposure to heat, cold, dust, noise)
- Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods of time when on the warehouse floor
- May require hands-on work with warehouse employees; ability to handle cases up to 50lbs.
