Position Overview

The EHS Supervisor plays a vital role in overseeing the implementation of safety protocols and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations as it pertains to working on Navy vessels at bases, shipyards or local facilities. This position is instrumental in fostering a safe and healthy work environment for all employees while upholding environmental regulations and safeguarding the overall well-being of personnel and operations.

Position Location: Norfolk, VA

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and enforce EHS programs, policies, and procedures that align with OSHA, EPA, NAVSEA and other relevant regulations.
  • Effectively communicate EHS information to employees, management, and regulatory agencies, as well as reporting on safety performance metrics.
  • Regularly conduct safety inspections in the shipyard environment to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety, health and environmental standards.
  • Lead accident investigations, analyze root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local EHS regulations, including those related to hazardous materials, air and water quality, and waste management.
  • Collaborate with local EHS personnel to support ongoing workplace audits, assist with daily safety operations, and provide mentorship to EHS staff.
  • Serve as the acting EHS Director during periods of leave or vacation, ensuring continuity of operations and maintaining compliance with all safety and environmental protocols.
  • Identifying potential hazards and risks associated with shipyard operations and implementing appropriate control measures.
  • Develop and Deliver safety training programs for employees on various topics, including hazard awareness, personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency procedures, and ensure they understand environmental, health and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with departments, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to promote a culture of safety and environmental awareness throughout the organization.
  • Monitor and report on safety performance metrics and recommend improvements as necessary.
  • Ensuring accurate and up-to-date documentation of EHS activities, including training records, inspection reports, and incident investigations.
  • Keep abreast of changes in EHS regulations and best practices and implement necessary updates to the shipyard’s EHS program.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in EHS management, preferably within a shipyard or maritime environment.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA, NFPA and EPA regulations, specifically 29CFR 1910 & 1915 for shipyards.
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, training, and analytical skills. Strong organizational and time management skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • 5 years of experience in safety or environmental role, preferable in the shipyard or maritime industry.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations
  • US Citizenship Required: This position requires that the applicant selected be a U.S. citizen, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. A current active Secret clearance is desired.

Required Certifications:

  • OSHA 30 Hour OSHA 30 hour OSHA Training Institute (OTI) courses or NAVSEA approved equivalent
  • Competent Persons - National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Marine Chemist or NFPA Instructor
  • CPR/AED First Aid Certification
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to speak Spanish.

Physical Requirements

  • The ability to navigate the shipyard environment, including confined spaces, elevated platforms, scaffolding, tanks and ladders.
  • Must be able to walk long distances to get to the worksite.
  • Must be physically able to move freely onboard ship, to traverse tight passageways, squat, stand, climb vertical ladders, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment.

Equipment Knowledge

  • Experience using and calibrating 5 Gas Analyzer Meters and Photo Ionizing Detector (PID) VOC Meter.
  • Experience using and calibrating Air Sampling Equipment and developing documentation to support the results of laboratory analysis.
  • Experience reviewing laboratory analysis to determine waste characteristics and health hazards to employees

Wage Range: $65,000 - $95,000

In determining compensation, various factors will be considered, including but not limited to, educational background, relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, market factors and geographic location.
