Position Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Estimator with a strong background in the surface preparation and industrial painting of tanks and structural steel. The ideal candidate will be responsible for accurately estimating labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs for coating and painting projects in industrial environments. This role requires an in-depth understanding of coating systems, surface preparation standards (e.g., SSPC/NACE), and field application methods.
Key Responsibilities:
· Review project specifications, drawings, and scopes of work to develop accurate and competitive cost estimates.
· Perform site visits and assessments to evaluate project conditions, access, and potential challenges.
· Calculate labor, material, and equipment needs for surface preparation (e.g., abrasive blasting, power tool cleaning) and painting/coating (e.g., spray, brush, roller application).
· Analyze technical data, blueprints, and client requirements for protective coatings on tanks, piping, and structural steel.
· Prepare and submit detailed bid proposals, pricing breakdowns, and quantity take-offs.
· Identify and evaluate project risks and provide solutions to mitigate them in the estimating phase.
· Coordinate with project managers, field personnel, and suppliers to ensure estimate accuracy and completeness.
· Stay current with industry trends, product developments, safety regulations, and coating technologies (e.g., epoxies, polyurethanes, zinc primers).
· Maintain historical cost data and contribute to the improvement of estimating procedures and tools.
Qualifications:
· 5+ years of experience in estimating or project management in the industrial painting or coatings industry.
· Strong knowledge of surface preparation and coating systems for steel structures and storage tanks.
· Familiarity with industry standards such as SSPC, NACE, ASTM, and applicable safety standards (OSHA, confined space, etc.).
· Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, specifications, and isometric drawings.
· Experience with estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
· Excellent mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills.
· Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
· Willingness to travel to job sites as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
· NACE or SSPC certifications (e.g., NACE Level I/II, SSPC PCI) are a strong plus.
· Experience working with estimating software.
· Knowledge of access and containment systems such as scaffolding and rigging in estimating process.
Physical Requirements:
· Must be able to conduct site walks including climbing ladders, accessing confined spaces, and working in industrial environments.
· Ability to wear required PPE (e.g., respirators, hard hats, safety glasses) during site visits.
