ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Your duties will include, but are not limited for:
  • Wait on the public or act as a receptionist in a small office; answer routine inquiries in person or by telephone.
  • Index, code and cross-reference records or files according to established procedures.
  • Do all types of filing (alphabetical, numerical, chronological and code) and pull and charge out file material.
  • Sort and arrange documents or correspondence in alphabetical or numerical order.
  • Make routine checks of clerical work for compliance with specific requirements of form and content.
  • Post data, keep records, and prepare reports in accordance with predetermined forms and procedures.
  • Make out bills, orders, notes, receipts, permits, licenses, etc., by hand.
  • Type forms, labels, licenses, permits, receipts, certificates, and similar material.
  • Operate various office machines or equipment requiring little specialized training.
  • Make routine adjustments through telephone calls or inter-departmental memos.
  • Open, sort, time stamp and route incoming mail; stuff, seal, stamp, meter, and register outgoing mail.
  • Do comparing and proofreading.
  • Search records and files for data.
  • Compute and receive fees when the amount is not in question or is readily obtainable from fixed schedules.
  • Requisition, receive and charge out supplies.
  • Collect and deliver correspondence, records, packages, etc., on regular messenger rounds and upon request.

REQUIREMENTS:

Selection Requirements:

Qualified candidates must possess a Typing Certificate
  • issued by any County Department, Department of Human Resources, or Los Angeles Unified School District or apply to the Department of Human Resources' Typing Test - Score-Banking Only** exam and pass the typing test with a minimum of 25 words per minute.

  • Only certificates and/or typing score notices issued by a Los Angeles County Department, Department of Human Resources or Los Angeles Unified School District will be accepted.

    ** The Department of Human Resources' Typing Test - Score-Banking Only exam is now open for application filing and will close December 31, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. (PT). Please click on the link Typing Test - Score-Banking Only to submit your application.

    Physical Expectations: This job will require light physical effort (Class II) which may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit; some bending, stooping or squatting; and considerable walking may be involved.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    The Assessment Process will consist of a timed typing test designed to measure speed and accuracy conducted by the Department of Human Resources. Applicants must achieve a passing score of at least 25 WPM.

    Typing Tests are not reviewable per CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    Test scores cannot be given over the phone.

    Eligibility Information:

    Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the register accordingly.

    Qualified applicants who receive a typing score of at least 25 words per minute will be placed on the eligible register without indication of relative standing for the duration of twelve (12) months. The eligible register will be used for temporary employment only.

    No person may participate in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months; doing so, will result in the rejection of your application.

    The director of personnel may randomly select eligible candidates for appointment, except that a person without veteran's credit may not be appointed if there are three (3) or more names on the list of persons entitled to veteran's credit.

    If you served in the military and were honorably discharged, you may qualify for Veteran's Credit. We will need a copy of your DD214 or any official document issued by your branch of service to determine veteran credit eligibility.     Available Shift and Vacancy Information:
    Appointments may require working any shift, including evenings, weekends, and holidays at the Department of Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk in Norwalk, CA.
