  • Serve as a communications adviser and strategist to the CEO, Chief People + Culture Officer, and rest of the Executive Team in support of mission and strategy, bringing the DEI embedded P+C strategy and our values to life
  • Devise and project manage the internal communications strategy by taking ownership of plans, tactics, and outcomes
  • Plug-in to the bigger picture to proactively look around corners (and executive schedules, conference opportunities, board meetings, etc.) and recommend communication and storytelling, then plan and execute accordingly
  • Drive distribution and promotion of the organization-wide calendar and coordinate with all departments to share need-to-know events and opportunities with all staff in a timely and effective manner
  • Plan the frequency and channels of communication and coordinate relevant content from stakeholders across the organization
  • Partner with volunteer relations and content team to create engaging, inspiring communications that drive deeper engagement with volunteer boards
  • Drive the programming of quarterly all-staff meetings and coordinate with presenters to build engaging and relevant content
  • Drive the content quality and usability of Canopy, our intranet, collaborating with IT team to maintain a healthy and robust platform that keeps staff connected, informed, and inspired
  • Measure and analyze communications efforts to gauge effectiveness against stated goals and modify communications based on analysis
TPL staff engagement
  • Develop and lead internal communications strategy to fostering strategic alignment and staff engagement; sharing stories of who we are/what we stand for; strengthen culture in a distributed remote hybrid workplace; be the connective tissue – strategic plan, KPI’s, day to day work, each other; partner on goal alignment and cascading mechanisms
  • With user input, refresh Canopy brand and functionality to be a destination for information, knowledge sharing and two-way communication. Oversee ongoing maintenance and relationship with site managers
  • Partner on staff engagement research; listening sessions as needed, report findings; co-facilitate action planning to identify staff-owned priorities and plans

  • Collaborate with P+C Partners on departmental and organization-wide projects Possible examples:
    • Embedding Values – partner in identifying how best to cultivate values org-wide
    • DEI plan implementation and scorecard – partner/support to Director of Equity and Belonging
    • Onboarding/Reboarding staff and board members, building on thinking-to -date; facilitating implementation
    • Action planning from Engagement Survey, along with mechanisms to survey and track staff experience

Writing, editing, and content development
  • Devise creative, fun, and interactive communications including written (emails, blog posts, FAQ), spoken (strategy presentations, all-staff meetings, speeches and talking points), and visual (presentations, infographics) to help leaders communicate strategy to staff and advisory boards and help staff provide feedback to leadership.
  • Find innovative ways to engage staff and support efforts to articulate organizational culture and values. Ensure that all internal communications efforts reinforce the employer brand, culture, and values.
  • Interact with and influence executives, providing coaching, ghost writing, editing, and message development that reflects an understanding of their business and leadership style, including serving as a primary writing and editing resource for the office of the CEO
  • Support staff in developing, editing and posting content on Canopy. Find innovative ways to engage staff and build a shared culture
  • Collect and utilize data (staff surveys, intranet analytics, etc.) to enhance internal communications efforts. Pilot new communications techniques and measure results.

What you bring
  • 5+ years’ experience in communications with a progressive growing, preferably mission-driven organization
  • Education preferably in journalism, public relations, communications, human resources management, marketing, or related field
  • Extensive writing and editing experience, including the planning, development, and distribution of communications materials in multiple formats. Experience writing and editing on deadline for a variety of different audiences.
  • Expert proofreader and editor with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to pull insights from data, craft recommendations, and implement communication testing strategies to drive improvements to KPIs
  • Experience with design software, digital collaboration tools, and video production
  • Tech-positive approach, always on the lookout for new and better techniques and platforms for digital outreach
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work with distributed stakeholders to drive a single brand strategy.

As a full-time, exempt employee, you will be eligible for The Trust for Public Land’s comprehensive benefits program, which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, three weeks of vacation annually plus thirteen holidays, and a 403(b) retirement plan, currently with a 7% company matching. We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience; the range for this position is $125,000-140,000 annually.
