WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Western Montana Forestry and Stewardship Assistant (FSA) works with TNC’s Montana Forest Team in various aspects of our community-based, collaborative conservation work, with a focus on restoration forestry, prescribed fire, recreation, and other land management projects. The FSA works on TNC-managed forest lands in Western Montana and on cross-boundary projects with federal and state agencies, non-profit organizations, and other partners. The FSA maintains conservation lands frequented by the visiting public, assists with monitoring and research projects, and maintains and operates tools and equipment. The FSA leads work groups and contractors to ensure the coordination, community support, and implementation of TNC’s conservation and land management goals. Starting salary for this position is $45,100 - $46,800 depending on experience.
The responsibilities and scope for this position include:

  • May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, partners and volunteers in western Montana.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and fundraising targets.
  • Networks with diverse groups, including landowners, neighbors, conservation partners, Tribes, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy programs/properties.
  • Works under minimal and/or distant supervision; will make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
  • Will work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, in occupied grizzly bear habitat, and under physically demanding circumstances.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
  • BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1 year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with natural systems.
  • Experience in ecological land management principles.
  • Experience operating, maintaining and/or repairing various types of tools, equipment and machinery.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
