Objective
The Electrical Service Technician manages the labor, materials, and production on service work orders and projects. The Service Tech provides technical expertise in existing or new installations as well as troubleshooting electrical wiring and equipment installations in varying environments.
A Service Technician works under the guidance of a Service Manager/Project Manager on installations, alterations, additions, and/or troubleshooting/repairing electrical systems. A Service Technician may oversee, direct and/or mentor a crew of 1-5 apprentices or helpers on larger service projects. Essential Functions

- Execute projects and documentation on time and within allocated installation hours.
- Work with the Service Manager/Project Manager to resolve all discrepancies, and coordination problems that impair installation activities.
- Communicate with vendors, engineers, owners, service managers, and other contractors to assure jobs/work orders are completed within scope and budget.
- Maintain the equipment, tools, and inventory in your service truck
- Read and interpret complicated blueprints, diagrams, submittals, specifications software/systems, programs, schematics, and operational product manuals.
- Safely operate a service truck following defensive driving techniques complying with the law, and maintaining a satisfactory driving record as detailed in the company policy manual
- Mandatory participation in the On-Call rotation to respond to unplanned/emergency work outside of the normal work schedule on and as needed basis
- Follow safety rules and notify supervision or others when a safety hazard is observed
- Instruct and train customers on functional operation of the equipment/system.
- Adhere to all Southwest’s, NEC, and OSHA safety policies and procedures.
- Experience with hand tools test equipment, multi-meter usage, digital analyzer and commissioning devices.
- Work in unusual and sometimes difficult position such as climbing ladders, scaffolding and high lift equipment up to 40 feet, working within ducts, crawl spaces, above ceilings, etc.
- Lead & work well with team members.
- Adhere to, implement, and always follow safety guidelines and procedures.
- Strong organizational skills, professional appearance, positive attitude, an ability to learn quickly and a team player who can work independently.
- Utilize smartphone/iPad/tablet for service calls
- Answer and/or return all calls received by customer service within the hour.
- Ensure all work is performed within the confines of Southwest’s safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Attend any required company meetings.
Skills/Competencies
- Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and NEC standards involved in electrical work
- Knowledge of Ohms Law and their applications to solve problems
- Install, maintain, and repair existing equipment.
- Determine condition of electrical equipment, troubleshoot malfunctions, and determine needed repairs.
- Evaluate customer requests and provide work order descriptions.
- Follow established processes and procedures.
- Participate in continuing education courses to grow technical and safety skills
- Prove outstanding customer service using strong communication skills
- Analyze information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems
- Ability to properly convey information to others using the English language, NEC, local, and other applicable documents to substantiate the information delivered to direct or indirect supervisors, peers, clients and subordinates
- Organize, plan, and prioritize work by developing specific goals and plans keeping the end result in focus
- Self-motivated and flexible to accommodate changes in Southwest’s business strategies.
- Maintain a neat and professional image. Wear company shirts, approved work pants and work boots.
Work Environment
Perform the physical demands of the position –which may include working in indoor and outdoor elements with extreme variation in temperatures and weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow)
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. The employee must physically able to lift heavy objects as necessary. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work vary, 40 hours per week, overtime is required. Travel, Nights, and Weekends may possibly be required. Job Sites can sometimes be in multiple locations or out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected for very short periods usually 1 or 2 days at most.
Required Education and Experience
- Licenses: Current Driver’s License and must have own reliable transportation.
- High School Graduate, GED or equivalent.
- Must have a valid Texas Journeyman’s Electrical License
- Pass background check, MVR, and drug test
Preferred Education and Experience
- NFPA 70, OSHA Training
- Proficiency in commercial, retail hospitality, institutional, and health care preferred.
- 2 years prior electrical work as a license Journeyman for the commercial construction industry.
Work Authorization/Security Clearance
- SB9
- Must be authorized to work in the United States of America
