Job Title: Exhibit Fabricator – Carpentry & Painting Specialist
SUMMARY
Exhibit Fabricators bring interactive exhibits to life for children’s museums and science centers nationwide. This position is focused on carpentry and professional painting/finishing, ensuring exhibits are built with structural integrity and visual appeal. The Fabricator is responsible for crafting wood components, applying high-quality finishes, and preparing exhibits for installation. While general fabrication skills are valuable, the strongest emphasis for this role is on woodworking and painting expertise. The position reports to the Head of Fabrication and collaborates closely with exhibit developers, engineers, and project managers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Carpentry & Woodworking (Primary):
- Fabricate exhibit structures, cabinetry, and furniture-quality components using a variety of woodworking techniques.
- Perform joinery, framing, CNC routing, laminate/veneer work, and assembly with precision and attention to detail.
- Ensure wood structures meet safety, durability, and design standards.
- Painting & Finishing (Primary):
- Apply professional-grade paint, stain, and protective coatings to exhibit components.
- Perform spray finishing, brush and roll applications, touch-ups, and surface preparation.
- Match colors, create smooth durable finishes, and maintain consistent quality across multiple projects.
- Ensure all paints and finishes meet safety standards for child-focused environments.
- Exhibit Construction (Secondary):
- Integrate wood, metal, and plastics into completed builds.
- Assist with the incorporation of mechanical or interactive components as needed.
- Shop & Installation Support:
- Participate in shop upkeep, tool maintenance, and material management.
- Support exhibit installation at client sites, ensuring wood and painted components arrive and are assembled in top condition.
- Collaboration & Problem-Solving:
- Work with team members to develop creative fabrication and finishing solutions.
- Communicate proactively about construction challenges, timelines, and quality standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in fabrication, design, or related trades.
- Minimum five years’ hands-on carpentry and/or painting/finishing experience.
- Advanced knowledge of woodworking, cabinetry, joinery, and finishing techniques.
- Demonstrated skill in professional painting and finishing methods (spray booth, HVLP, stain/clear coat application).
- Ability to work with a wide variety of materials, with woodworking and painting as the core focus.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects independently and meet deadlines.
- Interest in museums, education, or interactive experiences is a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, stretch, grasp, reach, kneel, and twist as needed in shop and installation settings.
