Burt’s Place is the brainchild of Burt Katz, the culmination of a fascinating and eclectic life. In 1962, before he got his start in pizza, Burt and his wife Sharon traveled from San Francisco to Japan aboard a tramp freighter to start their honeymoon. Once in Japan, they bought a Toyota pickup truck, then trekked west through the Pacific Islands and across Asia and Europe. They drove through Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq, picking up experiences and inspiration for both life and food. One year later, they returned to Chicago and Burt earned his pizza pedigree at the Inferno in Evanston. He went on to launch three legendary restaurants starting with Gulliver’s in 1965, followed by Pequod’s in 1971, and culminating with opening Burt’s Place in 1989.
His early travels may have been the real driving force behind Burt’s life with pizza – reminiscing on his time abroad, he wouldn’t talk about the sights. Burt’s best memories were of the people he and Sharon met. He never forgot the hospitality they extended or the personal connections they made, and he brought that warmth into his restaurants.
We’re brought his culminating effort, Burt's Place, to the Lafayette area – it includes a dining area for families (we serve all ages), a bar area for socializing and unwinding after a long day while enjoying an appetizer or a slice, and a convenient carry out/delivery area. We operate from 4 PM until 10 PM Monday through Friday, and open 11 AM until 10 PM Saturday and Sunday. We serve both our famous deep dish as well as a traditional Chicago-style thin crust pizza, appetizers, salads, and a variety of soft drinks.
