UHS, is a coeducational independent day school in San Francisco, California with 480 students in grades 9-12. Founded in 1975, the school’s mission is to challenge each individual to live a life of integrity, inquiry, and purpose larger than the self. UHS is located in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.
Position Overview:
University High School is currently seeking dynamic, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable Assistant Coaches to support its Girls and Boys Varsity Tennis programs. These seasonal, part-time positions require a commitment to educational-based athletics, a love for teaching the game, and the ability to support a culture of discipline, sportsmanship, and personal growth. The Assistant Coach works closely with the Varsity Head Coach to facilitate practices, support match play, and foster a positive experience for all student-athletes.
The ideal candidates will bring strong tennis knowledge, high emotional intelligence, and a collaborative mindset, while modeling the values of integrity, effort, and respect both on and off the court.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Support the overall coordination and execution of the Girls/Boys Varsity Tennis program.
- Assist in the planning and delivery of daily practice sessions and competitive match play.
- Teach and reinforce tennis fundamentals, advanced techniques, and strategic gameplay.
- Help cultivate a team culture rooted in responsibility, effort, sportsmanship, and joy.
- Maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment for all student-athletes.
- Provide supervision and support during practices, matches (home and away), and team events, including weekends and evenings.
- Ensure adherence to University High School, Bay Counties League–West (BCL), and North Coast Section (NCS) rules and expectations.
- Collaborate with the Head Coach and Athletic Department to coordinate logistics, transportation, and team needs.
- Encourage and support student-athletes in upholding training expectations, academic responsibilities, and team values.
- Maintain, store, and help manage team uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
- Represent UHS Athletics with professionalism in all interactions with students, families, opponents, and officials.
- Attend required meetings and maintain all necessary certifications and compliance documentation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Department.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Experience coaching tennis at the high school, college, or competitive club level.
- Strong understanding of tennis fundamentals, strategy, and skill development.
- Ability to participate in drills and rally with student-athletes during practices.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- CPR and First Aid certifications required (or willingness to obtain prior to the season).
- Experience in educational or youth development settings preferred.
