National Grid is hiring a Head of Stakeholder Management and Third Party Engagement. This role can be based in our Brooklyn, NY, Syracuse, NY or Albany, NY offices. This is a hybrid role, with a mix of office and remote work.
Job Purpose
Strategic, relationship-driven leader to serve as the company’s enterprise-wide architect of stakeholder and third-party engagement. As the Head of Stakeholder Management, build and oversee a comprehensive system for identifying, cultivating, tracking, and activating high-value stakeholder relationships—from policymakers, business, customer and community leaders to trade associations, think tanks, investors, NGOs, academics, and advocacy groups.
This role is instrumental in strengthening our influence, reputational resilience, and social license to operate. You’ll lead the development of tools, frameworks, and KPIs to ensure we are engaging the right people, with the right messages, at the right time—and leveraging partnerships to support strategic goals across Corporate Affairs and the broader enterprise.
Key Accountabilities
Stakeholder Strategy and Framework
- Design and operationalize a stakeholder engagement strategy aligned to business objectives, reputational goals, and policy priorities.
- Build and maintain an enterprise-wide stakeholder map and influence network across government, media, industry, academia, civil society, and communities.
- Define and segment stakeholder groups (e.g., high-impact, high-risk, emerging influencers) and assign engagement tiers and ownership.
Relationship Management and Activation
- Develop relationship strategies for priority stakeholders—including tailored engagement plans, executive sponsor matching, and key messaging frameworks.
- Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO, Executive Committee, and senior leadership on high-level stakeholder positioning and partnership opportunities.
- Coordinate relationship tracking, meeting prep, and follow-up across Corporate Affairs, business units, and executive leaders.
Third-Party Engagement and Coalition Building
- Identify, cultivate, and manage relationships with third-party validators—NGOs, think tanks, academic institutions, advocacy coalitions, etc.—that align with the company’s policy, community, and reputation goals.
- Lead development of MOUs, strategic partnerships, joint initiatives, and shared platforms to drive mutual value.
- Ensure third-party engagement supports and does not dilute the company’s narrative and priorities.
Tools, Insights & Reporting
- Build and oversee a stakeholder CRM or engagement tracking platform to ensure real-time visibility and coordination across teams.
- Develop KPIs, dashboards, and performance metrics for stakeholder and third-party engagement impact.
- Provide regular reports and insights to senior leadership, including stakeholder risk/opportunity analysis and executive briefing memos.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Communications, Policy, Social Impact, Strategy & Regulatory, Customer, and Business Unit teams to embed stakeholder strategy into all external affairs work.
- Ensure consistency, credibility, and effectiveness in stakeholder messaging and engagements across the enterprise.
- Support integrated issue and campaign planning with stakeholder insights and relationships.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in stakeholder engagement, government affairs, external relations, public affairs, or corporate social responsibility—ideally in a regulated industry.
- Deep understanding of stakeholder ecosystems (policy, community, civil society, business), reputation risk, and public-private influence strategies.
- Strong leadership, collaboration, and relationship-building skills—with demonstrated experience engaging C-suite leaders and external power players.
- Experience using or overseeing stakeholder tracking systems (CRM, Tunnl, Quorum, PublicRelay, etc.) and reporting frameworks.
- Excellent communication, diplomacy, and strategic advisory capabilities.
