Description
The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Recreation Specialist II with the Recreation Department. This position consists of professional recreation work in a variety of activities in a recreation facility or other recreation program areas. The employee works in partnership with co-workers, departments/divisions, agencies, and the public in delivering effective and innovative services. Provides holistic services to internal and external customers by seeking ways to integrate programs or services provided by other departments, divisions, and external entities.
Examples of Duties
- Assists in organizing, scheduling, and supervising activities and personnel related to facility and/or program operations.
- Assists with the development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of a variety of recreational programs, activities, and facilities.
- Monitors participants during programs by enforcing program and building rules, regulations and procedures.
- Evaluates assigned areas and recommends areas for improvement.
- Prepares program materials, equipment, first aid kits, and other necessary items.
- Models appropriate behaviors for participants at all times.
- Communicates openly and effectively with supervisor, other staff, and participants in order to provide excellent customer service.
- Reports any changes, conflicts, or unsafe circumstances to supervisor immediately.
- Responsible for the safety of self, staff, and participants.
- Responsible for proper use and care of materials, equipment, sites, and facilities used.
- Reports any accidents/incidents to supervisor and submits appropriate completed forms to supervisor within 24 hours.
- Supervises activities for participants engaged in recreation programs.
- Directs, guides, and motivates employees as needed.
- Supervises in the collection and counting of CORE receipts and cash drawer.
- Schedules, approves payroll, and ensures accurate documentation of time and attendance.
- Ensures CORE employees are working shifts to provide adequate staff coverage for CORE fitness.
- Hires and trains employees, and assists with employee corrective action and terminations as warranted.
- Maintains CORE equipment to proper working standards and coordinates repairs when necessary.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Requires knowledge of the equipment and facility. Working knowledge of first aid techniques. Basic knowledge of the Garden City Recreation and the various programs. Thorough knowledge of departmental rules and regulations. Skills in teaching program participants. Skills in operating a motor vehicle. Skills in the operation of a computer and applicable software. Skills in administering First Aid, CPR, and AED. Ability to exercise considerable initiative and sound judgement; plan, organize, assign, and review the work of subordinate staff; communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Education, Certification and Experience: High School Diploma or GED. BS in Exercise Science or related field is preferred, but not required. Past experience in management, fitness, or office is also preferred. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment.
Supplemental Information
Environment: Primarily located within a fully-equipped fitness facility. The space includes open workout areas filled with strength and cardio machines, free weights, and functional training zones. You'll oversee all equipment, lockers, front desk/reception areas, and staff offices.
Physical Characteristics: Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 100 lbs. of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
