We are seeking a technical robotics lab manager to be the go-to person for everything happening in our 1000 sq ft robotics lab/maker space. This dual-purpose role combines hands-on lab operations with technical mentorship, particularly supporting internal software engineers tackling hardware challenges as they build robotic projects. You’ll be joining a fast-moving robotics company where you'll have real ownership and impact from day one.
This is a full-time role based out of our New York, NY office (1900 Broadway) 5 days a week.
What You'll Do:
Lab Operations (30%)
- Bring structure and process to a well-equipped but under-organized lab
- Maintain equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutters, drill presses, electronics equipment, and robotic systems (UR20, xArm6)
- Establish and execute preventive maintenance schedules
- Manage inventory of consumables, limited resources, and checkout-required equipment
- Enforce lab usage policies while maintaining a supportive, collaborative environment
- Coordinate allocation of shared resources (bench power supplies, scopes, robot arms)
- Oversee the initial audit and organization of accumulated project materials
Technical Mentorship and Build Support (70%)
- Support internal robotic projects by unblocking software engineers as they navigate challenges around things like fabrication and electronics
- Assist with CAD design for both mechanical (3D printing) and PCB (Printed Circuit Board) applications
- Provide hands-on guidance for prototyping, from breadboard circuits to finished assemblies
- Help troubleshoot technical issues and suggest design improvements
- Bridge the gap between software engineering expertise and physical world implementation
What You'll Bring:
- 3+ years in a technical lab, maker space, or R&D environment
- Proficiency in CAD software for mechanical design
- Substantial electronics prototyping experience (circuit design, component selection, debugging)
- Hands-on experience with 3D printing, including troubleshooting and optimization
- Experience with basic fabrication tools (hand tools, power tools, precision equipment)
- Genuine excitement about Viam's robotics platform and mission
- Interpersonal skills for mentoring engineers with varying hardware experience
- Detail-oriented mindset with natural inclination toward organization and cleanliness
Benefits:
The starting salary for this role is between $90,000 - 115,000/year. Your exact offer will vary based on a number of factors including experience level, skillset, market location, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company. We recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced, or more senior, than this job description as posted.
