This internship provides experience in public sector communications, focusing on social media management and community engagement. Interns will help create, schedule, and manage digital content across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, LinkedIn, and the City's website, as well as support print and promotional materials. Responsibilities include monitoring and responding to public interaction, analyzing engagement data, and assisting with public information campaigns and events. The role involves storytelling, content creation, and collaboration with City staff and community partners. Interns should be creative, detail-oriented, and available for some evening and weekend events, working approximately 15–20 hours per week.
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
- Interest in public service, media journalist, marketing, communications, or relevant field
- Excellent writing and editing skills with attention to detail
- Familiarity with major social media platforms and digital/scheduling tools
- Ability to follow communication guidelines and maintain a professional online presence
- Organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, graphic design or video editing (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) (preferred)
- Enthusiasm for learning and contributing creative ideas
- Attend meetings and/or community outreach events that may occur during evenings and weekends
- Knowledge of basic research and statistical research method and techniques
- High level of integrity due to having access to all social media platforms
- Ability to work as part of a team

Examples of Duties
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in creating and scheduling engaging social media content across platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, LinkedIn, etc.)
- Monitor social media accounts for community questions, comments, and messages, responding as directed
- Monitor media trends, analytics, and audience engagement
- Research and recommend social media trends, best practices, and strategies for public sector communication
- Support digital campaigns, public information initiatives, and community events
- Ensure all content adheres to government communication policies and accessibility standards
- Capture and edit photos and videos for events, campaigns, and marketing materials
- Help draft press releases, blog posts, or other promotional materials
- Collaborate with the team on marketing and communications projects
- Adjust outreach strategies to fit community feedback and needs
- Work well with community leaders, agencies, and partner organizations
- Efficiently research and collect data, interviews, and images to create and publish original content
- Regularly present ideas for content creation and collection
- Assist the team in developing and maintaining editorial/content calendars
- Assist in the archiving and tagging of content assets for future use
Qualifications
Current enrollment in a college, or university (or recent graduation from a college or university).
College Intern Salary:
- $16.50 per hour for those who have not completed two years of education.
- $17.50 per hour for those who have completed a minimum of two years of education.
- $19.00 per hour for those who have completed a Bachelor's or higher degree.
Selection Process

Departmental Hiring Interviews: Accepted applicants will be interviewed by Staff and conditionally offered the hourly position if successful.
Background/Pre-employment Process: If applicable, candidates will need to complete a background that may consist of livescan fingerprinting and any other required screening.
New Hire Paperwork: After completion of the background/pre-employment process, successful candidates will complete new hire onboarding which includes paperwork, reviewing applicable policies, and training.
- Police Trainee receives medical, dental, sick leave and retirement benefits while in the Police Academy.
- Other seasonal employees receive sick leave and are limited to 999 hours per fiscal year.
