Overview of Thrift Shop Assistant Manager Position

The Thrift Shop Assistant Manager works closely with the Thrift Shop Manager to oversee the St. Francis of Assisi Community Thrift Shop, ensuring smooth daily operations of the store, including policy and procedural oversight. They will assist in supervising a group of both paid staff and volunteers, manage merchandise sales, deliver exceptional customer service, and provide store strategy and guidance. This position is a direct report to the Thrift Shop Manager and the Rector of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, and is responsible for the overall operations of the Thrift Shop in the absence of the Manager.

Responsibilities

· Assist in the daily store operations, ensuring the store is clean, organized, and well-stocked.

· Assist in opening and closing procedures, ensuring security and operational protocols are followed.

· Support implementation of store policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with organizational standards.

· Assist in developing updated policies and procedures documents in support of effective operational and internal accounting controls.

· Assist in managing point-of-sale and online sales channels.

· Assist in recruiting, training and supervising paid staff and volunteers.

· Develop staffing schedules, ensuring adequate coverage during all business hours.

· Foster a positive and productive work environment, promoting teamwork.

· Assist in conducting regular staff meetings and training activities to communicate goals, updates, and feedback.

· Support the receiving, sorting, pricing, and display of donated goods.

· Coordinate and maintain a steady flow of high-quality donations and effective distribution of other donated items to other charitable organizations.

· Support high levels of customer satisfaction through excellent service and prompt resolution of issues.

· Assist in addressing customer complaints and concerns in a professional and timely manner.

· Assist in developing marketing strategies to attract customers and donors.

· Plan and coordinate promotional events.

· Build and maintain relationships with community partners, donors, and volunteers.

· Represent the Thrift Shop at community events and functions.

· Assist in developing Thrift Shop budget, including sales forecasts and expense control.

· Support cash handling, balancing and deposit procedures.

· Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, and address any safety concerns promptly.

· Maintain a safe shopping and work environment.

· Attend meetings and prepare reports for Thrift Shop Board and Outreach Ministry as requested

· Other responsibilities as necessary to support the Thrift Shop Manager, and assume the overall responsibilities of the Thrift Shop in the absence of the Manager.

Competency – Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Ability to lead and motivate a staff of volunteers, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment

· Excellent organizational, prioritization, and multitasking abilities.

· Proficiency in inventory management and merchandising.

· Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.

· Proficiency with point-of-sale equipment and financial management systems.

· Knowledge of merchandising techniques to optimize store layout and product placement.

· Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.

Education and Experience

· Minimum of 2-3 years of retail management experience as a supervisor, preferably in a thrift shop or nonprofit environment.

· Experience with point-of-sale systems and online sales platforms preferred.

· Demonstrated ability in policy development and implementation.

Position Type

This position is a 12-month salaried position. The typical workweek is Monday through Wednesday from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., Friday from 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. These hours include those when the Thrift Shop is open for donations and those when weekly sales occur. Meetings with Board and others may occur outside of these times. This position is eligible for the following employment benefits: health insurance coverage, 403(b) plan, paid time off (2 weeks per year), and company-paid holidays.

Pay: $22,000.00 - $24,000.00 per year
