Summary of Position

The VAMA Technology Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the Visual, Audio, and Media Arts department by managing instructional technology, coordinating classroom and lab resources, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations. This position oversees equipment and software maintenance, supervises student employees, maintains inventory and reservations, and provides hands-on technical support to faculty and students. The Specialist also contributes to marketing, event coordination, and accessibility initiatives, helping to foster an engaging and well-equipped creative learning environment.

This position is primarily based at the Lakewood Campus but may require occasional travel to other RRCC locations based on program needs, cross-campus collaborations, or equipment logistics. While the typical work schedule is 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., flexibility is required to align with semester-specific needs and the VAMA course schedule. Evening and weekend hours may be necessary to support department events, exhibitions, student showcases, technical workshops, or time-sensitive support.

The role also includes responsibilities related to off-campus exhibitions, industry events, and community engagement activities, which may involve setup, transport, and technical support outside of standard hours.

A successful candidate possesses excellent communication skills, and is at ease with the following:

  • Technical Expertise & Problem Solving: Demonstrates proficiency with instructional and creative technologies (e.g., projectors, printers, Adobe Creative Cloud, WorldShare, Microsoft Bookings) and can troubleshoot, maintain, and update systems to minimize disruption and enhance learning environments.
  • Organizational Precision & Accountability: Excels at managing detailed operational workflows such as scheduling, inventory tracking, equipment checkout systems, and budget documentation, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and compliance across department functions.
  • Collaboration & Service Orientation: Builds strong relationships with faculty, staff, students, and IT partners; provides responsive front-line support and guidance; effectively trains and supervises student employees to ensure smooth lab and event operations.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of computer systems, software applications (including Adobe Creative Cloud), and technical equipment such as Photography, Videography, Audio gear used in the VAMA department.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and fix technical issues related to hardware, software, and AV equipment.
  • Ability to train and guide student employees and faculty in using department technology and software.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing inventory, scheduling, and coordinating department resources.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with faculty, students, and external contacts.
  • Basic knowledge of event planning and the ability to support the technical aspects of departmental events.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technology and departmental needs, with a proactive approach to continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree and two years relevant experience OR a bachelor’s degree OR equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
  • Experience in technical support or IT roles, with hands-on experience in repairing and maintaining technical equipment.
  • Relevant certifications such as Adobe Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a higher education environment or in a role that supports creative arts programs.
  • Expertise in specialized software and equipment used in the VAMA department, such as color calibration tools, advanced AV systems, and studio lighting equipment.
  • Experience in project management or coordination, particularly in event planning or technical projects.

Physical & Cognitive Demands

The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.

  • Moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • While this position involves significant computer use, it is not predominantly sedentary. The role requires regular physical activity related to managing and supporting various lab environments, which involves tasks beyond standard office work.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.

Starting Salary

Starting salary range for this position is $47,396 - $52,136 annually, commensurate with education and experience. This is a full-time, FLSA-exempt position. This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.
