Overview
Temple Beth-El seeks a detail-oriented and highly professional Full Charge Bookkeeper to join our operations team. This key role is responsible for the day-to-day financial management of the Temple, including accounts receivable and payable, payroll, bank reconciliations, financial reporting, and general support of office operations.
The Bookkeeper reports to the Executive Director and works in close coordination with the Financial Vice President. The ideal candidate brings precision, discretion, organizational excellence, and a commitment to outstanding service to both staff and congregants.
Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Manage all day-to-day accounting and cash handling for the congregation
- Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with standards set by the Financial Vice President, Temple officers, and external auditors
- Process payroll for semimonthly and monthly employees
- Coordinate onboarding for new employees and support annual benefits enrollment
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of all financial transactions, including A/R, A/P, and donations via check, credit card, and stock
- Handle sensitive financial matters with members discreetly and professionally
- Attend Finance Committee meetings and provide reports as requested
Team & Office Support
- Engage positively with congregants, providing exceptional customer service
- Collaborate with office staff to assist with phone coverage, front desk reception, and welcoming visitors
- Support Temple events and holiday observances, including occasional weekend availability
- Participate in weekly staff check-ins and monthly team lunches
- Perform additional administrative or financial projects as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Business, or a related field (preferred), or equivalent experience
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with synagogue or nonprofit membership management software (ShulCloud or similar) preferred
- Strong organizational skills, high attention to detail, and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Flexible, reliable, and able to adapt to changing needs and priorities
- Team player with a positive and proactive attitude
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $60,000–$67,000, based on experience
