YOUR FUTURE TEAM
As part of TCEQ’s Office of Water - Watermaster Section, you would ensure compliance with water rights in the Brazos River Watermaster Program, protecting Texas’ water resources. See details about what we do.
This position is a member of our Water Availability Division.
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
- Conduct diversion site visits and complaint investigations to ensure compliance with Agency and Watermaster rules and regulations for the Water Availability Division of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
- Administer complex field visits of surface water diversion sites to include initiating action to stop illegal diversions of state surface water, verifying flow rates through use of mathematical formulas or electronic equipment, and preparing reports.
- Conduct surface water complaint and temporary permit investigations; respond to public inquiries; research ownership records of water right holders and/or complaints related to ownership issues; prepare reports based on findings and make recommendations if appropriate.
- Maintain databases containing water right holders and generate reports; provide technical assistance to agency staff, the public, the regulated community, and other interested groups regarding rules, regulations, and policies involving the Watermaster program. Conduct presentations involving the Watermaster program.
- Update management of work status and issues; participate in the development and implementation of team and section procedures that enhance quality and efficiency.
Qualifications
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience conducting environmental inspections and/or investigations.
- Experience working with irrigation, farming, and/or with industrial practices involving surface water.
- Experience preparing correspondence.
- Experience using Word or Excel.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with a major in a natural or physical science, engineering, environmental studies, or related field, plus two years of full-time experience in environmental activities.
One year of full-time experience in the field of environmental activities may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education.
OR
A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the degrees listed above, plus one year of the required experience.
OR
A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, science, environmental studies or related fields.

CURRENT TCEQ EMPLOYEES
This position is also available as a lateral transfer opportunity (LTO) to TCEQ employees within the Natural Resources Specialist III state classification. The selected candidate must meet the minimum qualifications of the corresponding job in the Watermaster Specialist III series.
Work Schedule
Standard business hours are M-F, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Individual and work group schedule determined by the TCEQ Water Availability Division.
